12 reasons to try Linux Mint 12

From PCWorld.com I read this article, to which I have made a modest translation for you 🙂

So here I leave you 12 reasons to try Linux Mint 12 (Lisa):

1. Everything for users:

Released in 2006, Linux Mint has a well-deserved reputation for ease of use. A variety of graphical tools give community-driven software a dose of additional ease-of-use, while the inclusion of numerous multimedia codecs improves hardware compatibility. Mint's goal is to deliver "a better, less complex experience."

2. A helping hand:
Perhaps the best example of Mint user care is this new version, is that while the Linux Mint team has decided to adopt and bet on the controversial GNOME 3 desktop environment, it does not force users to dive headfirst into it. In contrast, an extra layer called MGSE, or GNOME Shell Extensions for Mint, has been added to help users get into GNOME 3 little by little. By choosing and selecting the components MGSE allows, users can customize and modify the desktop they use.
3. A close friend:
Not only is MGSE for Gnome3, but also users who are not ready to adopt the new desktop (Gnome3) have the option of using MATE, a fork of Gnome2. MATE is included in the DVD edition of Linux Mint 12, and users of the CD edition can be installed via the package mint-meta-matt.

4. No Unity in sight:

Linux Mint 12 is based on the new Ubuntu 11.10 yes, but that this distro has chosen Unity as the default environment, it does not affect anything with Linux Mint. That this detail is a great advantage point, as it will attract the thousands of disgruntled Ubuntu users.

5. Another search engine:

Rather than Google or another of the big search engines out there, Linux Mint has formed a partnership with DuckDuckGo, which is based on open source software and has cool features / options. Now by default in Mint, DuckDuckGo is especially notable for the fact that it does not track users, that is, personal or shared information is not collected / saved from users, nor is it used to personalize the results of each search user. With DuckDuckGo, all search engines within a given time will get the same results. Of course, if you have a favorite search engine you prefer instead, you can easily install it.

6. Improved artwork:

I have always thought that Mint is one of the most beautiful distributions, and version 12 is no exception, it brings us beautiful colors and certainly attractive environment.

7. A whole set of good applications:

Along with Linux Mint comes a wide range of software applications including Firefox, Thunderbird, LibreOffice, the GIMP, and the Totem movie player.

8. Strength:

Linux kernel 3.0 is the basis for Linux Mint 12 alongside Ubuntu 11.10 and GNOME 3.2.

9. Strength even in its numbers:

Linux Mint is now ranked as the most popular Linux distribution on DistroWatch, the usurpation of Ubuntu to whom this leadership position has long belonged has astonished many. Use the Mint, and you're in good company. Some saw that coming, others thought it was impossible ... and there are others who think it is only temporary 😀

10. Security and robustness:

Linux is known for its security, and Linux Mint takes a number of additional steps towards security and reliability, including a conservative approach to software updates and a single update manager. The end result is an operating system that requires very little maintenance.

11. Everything in your hands:

Customization is one of the strengths of Linux, and users can customize the appearance of desktop software, application suite, and much more. After life in the commercial world, it is a true revelation to be able to make the operating system truly yours.

12. Free… and FREE !!!

Last but certainly not least is the fact that Linux Mint is free and open source software. It is free in price, yes, but it is also free for you to use however you want. You can say goodbye to technology providers once and for all.
With all the controversy that we've seen surrounding Ubuntu Unity and GNOME 3, I'm very excited to see how users react to this new version of Mint with its hybrid approach.

Actually, as I said in the post «4 good reasons to try openSUSE 12.1«, Many of these reasons or motives are shared by other distros, that new software is not really a strong point of Linux Mint, but hey ... if I start to criticize, I never finish HAHA.

I do not know to what extent the new search engine is something entirely positive, because with all the criticisms and unfavorable opinions, Google is still the one that gives us the best results, if someone uses the new search engine it would be great if they gave their opinion here.

Nothing that users of this distro have reason to be proud of.

Greetings and congratulations to the Minteros (Mint users) 😀

Well, it seems like an excellent distribution to me, however for me that I like to try new things it just doesn't work, maybe it's the computer I wanted to install on, maybe it's my total lack of experience in Linux, but what is a fact is that it doesn't It worked for me, I tried it on two computers, the work PC (HP Omni100) and it does not work properly, I think they are the video drivers because Gnome does not display properly and if I activate the proprietary drivers things are worse, flat The screen is totally distorted and I can only get out with the ctrl + alt + bcksp, And on the other hand I tried to run the system on a HP Laptop too but this is the HP PAVILION DV4-4080 model and there the matter was worse, because I could only get a totally black screen and a reboot without any success, it's a shame since I really want this distribution and as a person who has been dedicated to support for some time, I know that is why the success of Windows, you install it and it is sure that That it works without major problem, you update some drivers if necessary and that's all, on the other hand with linux although obviously it is better it is still annoying that you have to look for one or more solutions so that things can work for you.

      Welcome Alfonso:
Comparing the performance of a Hardware in Windows against the same Hardware in Linux is a bit unfair. Remember that most of the Hardware that goes on the market by the manufacturer includes drivers for Windows and not for GNU / Linux, so the work of developers who sometimes use reverse engineering, manage to make a generic driver is worthwhile. Maybe LM 12 doesn't work for you, but another distribution does. What I do assure you is that there must be a solution. Maybe by disabling ACPI or something like that at boot ...

      regards

And in fact I tried Ubuntu but that Unity interface is a disaster for my taste, I tried Fedora and Gnome3 I just don't like it, I just have to try some other like SUSE. From what you say about the Hardware it is true, a lot goes out to make it work well and more than well in Windows and I have not deny that in Linux they always surprised me with the support for new drivers, only that for me, the distribution that would make me pass Linux definitely failed me on the last pull. And what you say about disabling, well I refer to my first comments, they are my first steps in Mint.

Look how curious, Linux Mint uses basically the same packages as Ubuntu, however one works for you and another does not. Have you tried LMDE yet?

            You see? You see?

    2.    Raul said

In fact I have also had problems with ubuntu since I also have a pavilion dv4, but apart from the graphic problems is the fact that I have never been able to configure the wireless, since there are no drivers for hp in the linux database , is it the same problem with mint?

If someone installs Linux Mint just by looking at '5. Another search engine: », you should buy a brain hahaha, I say because of how easy it is to change the search engine: D. Ah! 12 totally subjective reasons from the point of view of who created the post. (I have nothing against Linux Mint).

Obviously I noticed that the 12 reasons are aimed at people who from my point of view do not use gnu / linux, (I think so) because at least 11 of the 12 are refutable or applicable to most of the distros, in fact archlinux according to one of the points has even more (8. Strength :), because it uses kernel linux 3.1.3

Be careful not to criticize Linux Mint, but to the way the creator of the theme tries to sell it. (almost a dejavu of what they do with buntus).

    1.    elav <° Linux said

Man, clearly the author of the post was excited about the MGSE novelty or something. 😀

  3.   elav <° Linux said

We go by points, from my opinion:

1- The author is very right. It is true that Mint developers think of their users.

2- The best decision the guys from Mint could make: MGSE.

3- Another good decision, MATE. Gnome2 users will be grateful in the long run for this.

4- Well, for those who do not like Unity all right, for those who do, they can always install it, or not?

5- According to Eduar2. This point has absolutely nothing to do with it.

    6- +1 And I've always said it.

7- It is also true that it includes good Software by default, not to mention the Mint-Tools.

8- To me the use of Kernel 3.0 does not show me any strength .. Why should it?

    9- Irrelevant ..

10- If maybe we were talking about LMDE, this point would have more weight.

11- Does any other distro prevent you?

12- The same .. How many are not free and free?

Honestly none of these reasons have convinced me to use Linux Mint (based on Ubuntu).

    1.    Courage said

How many are not free and free?

      SuSE and Red Hat?

      1.    elav <° Linux said

Please, someone clarify if I'm wrong, but what does RedHat and SuSE charge for Support and some other application?

        1.    Courage said

I think so but it still charges you for something

  4.   Oscar said

The reasons they state for me do not have the necessary strengths for me to use Mint (based on Ubuntu). I prefer the derived versions in Debian directly.

With Linux mint 9 Isadora I started in the world of linux, then I went around several versions of Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Opensuse, Slax, Vector Linux and fedora to finally return to the menthol distribution which is the one I feel most comfortable with 🙂 Long live Linux Mint 🙂

  6.   yathedigo said

We go in parts. Nobody has made it clear that this version of Mint12 DOES NOT WORK with Ati cards, and it is essential to warn people that this is so. Until January no drivers are expected capable of moving the Gnome shell on Ati cards. I am an old Mint user, since 8, but now I am with Unity (which does NOT give problems with Ati cards) and so happy. Besides the gallium drivers that if they operate with the shell, they swing very often leaving the machine unusable, it is only possible to use gnome shell in fall back mode in all the distros that incorporate this shell: Fedora, Ubunutu, Open ...
So then the only possibilities for ati using drivers in conditions are Unity or return to linux Katya or earlier.
    Good job they do. Regards.

      Welcome yathedigo:

Thanks for the clarification. I didn't know anything about it 😀

Hello and welcome to the site 🙂
Actually I do not know the problems that Ati Mint may present, I only did the translation of the article from English to Spanish and gave a small opinion at the end, but it is good that you really clarify it ... the positive is always said and not or negative 😉

Greetings and welcome to the site really 😀

    3.    Alfonso said

My problem has already come up, in fact with ATI they do not work. Thanks for the clarification.

I have been trying to solve some doubts, but without good results. Let's see if someone here has things clearer and helps me solve those doubts:

Are the MGSE extensions all developed by Mint or does it also incorporate part of the extensions added to the Gnome shell extension project?

Does Mute work on the Gnome3 fallback, is it independent of it or is it something different from the previous ones?

Does Mute work on metacity or on Mutter?

I have not tried LM 12 yet but I have these doubts. Hopefully someone can help me clarify them.

    Greetings.

    1.    elav <° Linux said

Well, MGSE is developed by Mint. If they took an extension from someone else, I don't know. MATE is a fork of Gnome2, nothing to do with Gnome-Fallback and yes, it runs with Metacity ..

      1.    Thirteen said

        Thanks for responding.

        Greetings.

    2.    Edward2 said

MGSE is not a single extension, they are a set of them of which I think Linux Mint only created the menu that appears in the lower left.

      1.    Thirteen said

That was the idea I had, but I wasn't sure. Well, precisely, it gave me the impression that the MSGE extensions, or at least some, were actually the extensions for Gnome 3 that are available for any other distro with that environment.

        Thanks for your answer.

        Greetings.

Well, well, the list is marketing and it works well, I seemed to be reading a product box.

I am opcessed to switch to Linux, I am currently using LMDE in my office, but the incompatibility problems with the different equipment of the company (printer, Faxes, Scaners) leaves me no other way out than to try going to Ubunto (in which already previously I had everything working properly).

not if someone guides me before installing ... I await your comments ...

Head over to the blog forum, they opened it yesterday

I really want to try Mint 12 although I still don't know whether to choose the Debian-based or Ubuntu-based one… Any recommendations ??? I have never used Debian!
Another thing: Does anyone know where I can download it from in Cuba? (The ftp of the ICU is too far for me heh!)
A hug and Thanks for the post !!!

      Greetings Sebastian:
What distro do you use? Where in the hemisphere do you live?

      1.    Courage said

Damn, if he lives in Cuba, you will know in which hemisphere he lives, in the same hemisphere as you. If you want I can help you a little with geography HAHAHAHA

        1.    elav <° Linux said

How do I explain to your summarized brain? Cuba is more than 1000 km long. The question was to know in which Province / Municipality / District he lived. Didn't they teach you that when the elders speak, the children make silence with their hands behind?
