5 little known things to do with VLC

VLC Media Player is one of the best video player programs, and one of the most popular among users due to its ability to play virtually any format. However, in addition to being an excellent video player, it offers many other features that go unnoticed and that you probably don't know about, unless you use the program a lot.

1. View and download YouTube videos

YouTube video playback in vlc

VLC allows you to play YouTube videos by simply entering the link of the video you want to see in the corresponding tab. You just have to go to Media> Open Network Stream, and then paste the URL of the video. Finally, you have to click on «Play».

In case you want to download the video, you can go to Tools> Codec Information (CTRL+J). Then paste the address into the "Location" field. In this way, you will be able to save the video by clicking on "Save as", or with the shortcut CTRL + S.

2. Listen and download music online

streaming with vlc

The CTRL + L command allows direct access to your playlists. From there you can access Free Music Charts, Freebox TV, the Icecast radio directory, Jamendo or Channels.com. Podcasts and custom broadcasts can also be added. Such online content is accessed through streaming.

To download your favorite songs, once VLC is playing them, just choose the "Save" option. You can even choose the file format!

3. Record video with your webcam

video capture with vlc

Not many know it, but VLC allows you to record video from a webcam connected to your PC. It is one of the easiest options to use. All you have to do is go to Media> Open Capture Device (CTRL + C), and select the desired capture mode. From there you can also configure the audio / video capture device, its quality, etc.

4. Convert videos to different formats

VLC also allows you to save video and audio in MP4, WebM, TS, OGG, ASF, MP3 and FLAC. It's as easy as going to Media> Convert (CTRL + R). Then, you have to select the file to convert and click "Convert". VLC will ask us to choose in which folder to save the converted file and its output format.

5. Audio and video synchronization

How many times has it happened that after waiting a long time to download a TV show or movie, you find that the audio does not play smoothly with the video, making it extremely difficult to follow the plot?

Solving this problem is as easy as pressing the key F o G while the video is playing. The key F rewinds the audio as far as video is concerned, and the key G advances the sound relative to the image. With this simple trick, it will only take you a couple of seconds to sync the video with the audio.

Very good, gentlemen. One of the reasons I use this Swiss Army Knife.

One was missing, yes: Make screencasts. Having VLC, I don't need programs like GTKRecordMyDesktop, being that it does it super well 😀

    1.    Lolo said

The truth is that I knew those options, well, except for adjusting the audio of a video. The post is appreciated to refresh the memory 😀

How is that from Screencasts with VLC ???

Of that I really had no idea.

      1.    Jorge said

I knew them too, all of them, I even have it connected to my TuneIn Radio account.

Regarding screencasting, it is similar to recording from the camera in the "Open capture device" option, but instead of using V4L, you use the "Desktop" option as the capture mode. Then you hit Play and voila 😀

By default, the output video is saved in the Home, but you can configure it with all the pertinent options for it

I've always wanted to make desktop videos to record tutorials and things like that but when uploading them to YouTube they take the same life, if I want things to be faster I have to lower the quality a lot.

Do you control something of the subject?

I imagine that the same parameter can be adjusted to the VLC so that it optimizes the videos for YouTube.

    2.    Arthur said

If you want to screencast with audio, you will need them. VLC does not record audio directly. 😉

      1.    Jorge said

From what I understand it is possible, but it requires a bit more work in setup, but it is possible.

Actually an impressive and cross-platform tool, the only thing I can criticize is its speed when starting

  19.   Authorless said

Speed when starting? I do not remember seeing slowness in VLC when starting, nor in machines with 90 MB of ram, it is a good player, also it consumes almost no resources.

Thanks for the post. One point, only, that will be useful to the user who is interested in downloading YouTube videos with Vlc.

    let's use linux:
(Then, paste the address in the "Location" field. In this way, you will be able to save the video by clicking on "Save as", or with the shortcut CTRL + S.)

It would not be better, so as not to fall into confusion, the following:

(Once Codec Information is open, we copy the data from the Place box and paste it in the address bar of the browser (in my case Firefox) we give it to search and when the video is played, right click save as.

It is that when you reach that point, you stay, like blank.

    Great post.

  23.   Ed said

To download your favorite songs, once VLC is playing them, just choose the "Save" option. You can even choose the file format!

It should be noted that if you want to hear what is being recorded, you have to check the Show the Output box.
