Many confuse the term open source with free software, but they are not the same, although it is true that all free software is open source, but not all open source it is free software. The difference lies in the licenses under which the projects are published, since some are more restrictive like GPL and others less restrictive like BSD, although this is another matter that we are not going to talk about now ... Also, not always free software o open source runs only under GNU / Linux, it can also be used on other operating systems.

What interests us in this article is open source software, since we are going to make a list of the best programs or open-source projects that we can use in 2018. Obviously, the number of these projects is very large and we cannot filter them all, but we have chosen our selection according to some criteria. If you have your candidate for best open source software, you can leave the name in the comments to share your opinion...As for our selection, the 7 best projects Open Source 2018 are:

  • LinuxWithout this kernel we would not be enjoying the operating systems that we currently enjoy, so it is the first in our mention.
  • GNU: The whole GNU fabric that encompasses many programs that serve as a complement to the kernel to complete the system also deserve our special mention.
  • LibreOffice: is one of the best free and open source office suites, a good alternative to MS Office from which we all benefit.
  • GIMP: another of the great projects with which you can edit images and design. Without a doubt the best alternative to Adobe Photoshop.
  • Blender- Powerful, professional, and advanced 3D modeling and simulation software that has little or nothing to envy other proprietary and closed source programs. Moreover, I would say that it is an alternative that is above many paid products ... It is the best example that free or free is no worse than paid.
  • VLC MediaPlayer: It has become one of the best multimedia players and one of the most accepted formats, being an all-rounder of audio and video.
  • Mozilla Firefox: without hesitation, one of the best browsers in the world. It is powerful, customizable and complete.

I do not agree which license between GPL or BSD is more or less restrictive, that BSD is less restrictive is only in the first licensing, because later the modifications can become more restrictive with BSD than with GPL, therefore in in the medium and long term it is safer for the GPL to leave more freedom. I think Mac OS X came out of a BSD license.

Excuse my comment if it is offensive to someone or to the author, but why to put the title "7 best open source projects for 2018" when all are existing projects (some for decades) with that title means that they are new projects arise in this year.
This article and that of the topics leaves much to be desired, the quality has dropped a lot
