LibreOffice 7.2 alpha testing has started

The Document Foundation unveiled several days ago the start of alpha testing for what will be the new version of LibreOffice 7.2 and which the stable version is expected to be arriving no later than August 22 (if all goes according to plan).

In addition it is mentioned that the OpenGL rendering code was removed in favor of Skia / Vulkan, a pop-up interface was added to find settings and commands in the style of MS Office, which is displayed over the current image (front view screen, HUD) .

Of the other changes that stand out in this alpha version:

  • Added a section to the sidebar to manage Fontwork effects.
  • The main notebook bar has the ability to scroll through items in the style selection block.
  • Optimized performance of Calc.
  • Updated collection of templates in Impress.
  • Improved font caching for faster text rendering.
  • Import and export filters were improved, many crashes in the import and export of WMF / EMF, SVG, DOCX, PPTX and XLSX formats were resolved.

How to install the alpha version of LibreOffice 7.2 on Linux?

If they are users of Ubuntu or derivatives, first we must first uninstall the previous version in case of having it, this is in order to avoid later problems, for this we must open a terminal and execute the following:

sudo apt-get remove --purge libreoffice*
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get autoremove

To download the new LibreOffice package, we are going to execute the following command:

Download now we can extract the content of the downloaded file with:

tar xvfz LibreOfficeDev_7.2.0.0.alpha1_Linux_x86-64_deb.tar.gz

We enter the created directory:

cd LibreOfficeDev_7.2.0.0.alpha1_Linux_x86-64_deb/DEBS/

Y finally we install the packages that are inside this directory with the following command:

sudo dpkg -i *.deb

Now we proceed to download the Spanish translation package with:
cd ..
cd ..
wget http://download.documentfoundation.org/libreoffice/testing/7.2.0/deb/x86_64/LibreOfficeDev_7.2.0.0.alpha1_Linux_x86-64_deb_langpack_es.tar.gz

And we proceed to unzip and install the resulting packages:

tar xvfz LibreOfficeDev_7.2.0.0.alpha1_Linux_x86-64_deb_langpack_es/DEBS/
sudo dpkg -i *.deb

Finally, in case of having a problem with the dependencies, we can execute the following command:

sudo apt-get -f install

We unzip the packages with:

tar xvfz LibreOfficeDev_7.2.0.0.alpha1_Linux_x86-64_rpm.tar.gz
tar xvfz LibreOfficeDev_7.2.0.0.alpha1_Linux_x86-64_rpm_langpack_es.tar.gz

We proceed to install the suite with:

cd LibreOfficeDev_7.2.0.0.alpha1_Linux_x86-64_rpm/RPMS/
cd RPM
sudo rpm -i .*rpm

We leave the directory and proceed to install the language pack with:

cd ..
cd ..
cd LibreOfficeDev_7.2.0.0.alpha1_Linux_x86-64_deb_langpack_es/RPMS
sudo rpm -i .*rpm
