Calligra Suite Beta 1 is here: the KDE office suite

Many of you will know K OfficeThose who don't should know that it is a KDE SC's own open source office suite. It is not like OpenOffice or LibreOffice that are independent of desktop environments, KOffice is, rather, the KDE SC office suite.

Not long ago the KDE team decided that it was time to break new ground with their suite and that's how it was born Calligra, the successor to KOffice. And it has not been until these days that we see the first beta version that comes loaded with news.

All the new features of Calligra Suite Beta 1, by applications, would be the following:

  • Words (Word processor) improves its support for tables of contents, text tables and adds support for entering citations and bibliographies in the document and a new search bar.
  • Table (Spreadsheets) improves the handling of large boards and their load increases in speed considerably.
  • Stage (Presentations) gains a new view for slide arrangement, which also serves for creating custom presentations.
  • Kexi (Database) launches a new home screen that confirms the start of the redesign that awaits the application.
  • Plan (Project Management) improves its printing support with many types of graphics and scripting, for a better import of data from external sources.
  • Flow (Diagrams) Get support for downloading templates through KNewStuff, so they are easier to share with users.
  • brain dump is a new Calligra application that literally serves "to download and organize the content of your brain, such as ideas, drawings, images, texts, etc". In the absence of seeing it, it sounds interesting.

Leaving productivity tools behind, artistic applications also present changes:

  • Krita (Drawing and retouching) has received major improvements in the management and editing of its brushes, which can even be labeled to organize them in semantic markers (Nepomuk in action). Added to its characteristics is a new dialogue for the selection of more efficient palettes that comes thanks to the dialogue between users and developers.
  • Karbon (Vector Graphics) especially improves on its support of SVG format, gains a new color bar to select colors between different palettes and a new feature called artistic text.

Also there is many important internal improvementsespecially with the interaction between the different parts of the suite. For example, dragging and dropping images into the same applications from different locations is already supported.

El The suite's native file format is Open Document Format, ODF, so the compatibility with other suites, such as LibreOffice -even Microsoft Word in its latest versions is able to read these formats, is guaranteed. Likewise, there are improvements in compatibility with the format used by the Microsoft suite.

But the thing has not stopped there; many know that KDE also has ambitions and works on its products for mobile and touch devices, that is why we also have Calligra Mobile, and for touch devices, Calligra Active, with various minor improvements.

We can test the suite using the unstable repositories of our distributions; in the case of Ubuntu and co. we have a PPA prepared.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa: neon / ppa sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install project-neon-base project-neon-calligra project-neon-calligra-dbg

Great news! I was anxiously waiting for this beta to be able to test it and get rid of libreoffice looking for more compatibility with my dear kde. To find it in the archlinux repositories to see if it is already there.

    Regards!

I looked at the official Calligra page and that's what they recommend to install it on Ubuntu.
    Look at this link: http://userbase.kde.org/Calligra/Download
Anyway, I'm going to check it out.
    Hug! Paul.

Yes, there I saw the packages, but it can only be installed in Natty or Oneric. For older versions there are unmet dependencies. Thanks crazy, hug
