Distros and programs for hospitals or clinics

Much is seen on the net about the use of free software in large and small companies, but very little is seen about the use of free software in other types of companies or institutions such as hospitals or clinics, which is the topic that I am going to touch on. today.

The Biolinux Group of Buenos Aires-Argentina carried out years ago (2003) an exhaustive analysis of the Argentine hospital computer situation that presents, as in all of Latin America, particular nuances such as ...

  • Low degree of hospital computerization and low percentage of network implementation in hospitals
  • There is no single operating system in the hospital or regional network, with the consequent lack of standardization of communication protocols, application sharing, tools, etc.
  • There is no single clinical history system in health institutions, only local systems without standardization.
  • There is no unified implementation of hospital computer systems with image management and telemedicine
  • Most software systems are proprietary, having been developed by programmers or software companies, with high development and licensing costs.
  • In addition to this, there is a lack of alternative operating systems and computer tools under free software.
  • Limited resources are evident in terms of the common denominator of available hardware.
  • The main computerized hospital areas correspond to administrative, accounting and billing.

As you will see, these cases must be presented in many countries and without necessity because all this can be covered by making use of free software. Then I comment which distributions and applications exist for it.

SaluX is the name of the official distribution of the group, a new project of the BioLinux Group in which the creation of a GNU / Linux distribution for hospitals and health institutions is pursued. SaluX is based on Debian and will be specifically designed for installation in hospitals and clinics. More information on the SaluX site at http://www.salux-project.eu/es. Unfortunately this system did not receive any more updates for a couple of years but I put it because it was well known at the time.

CD-Medic
is another Knoppix based distribution with various medical image simulators, DICOM viewer and PACS system. Available in http://cdmedicpacsweb.sourceforge.net/cdmedic/es/index.html . Among the applications included are: Amide (Image fusion), Aeskulap (DICOM viewer), Xmedcon (format converter), AFNI (FMRI analysis and visualization), DICOM to Analyze / SPM autoconverter, OpenOffice 2.0 (office suite), Medical Spell Checker, CUPS (print management), Mozilla Firefox (browser), Thunderbird (mail), Gimp (photo retouch), Imagemagick (photo retouch), XSane (scan), VLC (video player) and Xmms (video player). audio) among others.

GNU-Med on Knoppix
: a new version of GNUMed has been implanted on a Knoppix CD. This allows you to test GNUMed without having to install GNU / Linux. GNU-Med is a multiplatform client-server software developed in Python and connected to a database in PostgreSQL, This free software is for the management of hospitals, clinics and offices. http://www.gnumed.org/

debian-med
is an internal project to develop a "Custom Debian Distribution" that is particularly well suited to the needs of medical practice and research. The aim of Debian-Med is a complete system for all tasks carried out in medicine, built entirely with free software. debian-med

Care2x
is another computer development for hospitals based on Apache, PHP and MYSQL. Available in Spanish among other languages. It has modules for admission and registration of patients and professionals, pharmacy stock management, shifts and laboratory and radiology practices, among others. Learn more at http://sourceforge.net/projects/care2002/.

OpenClinic
combines open source solutions to provide a free and open development platform. It is capable of running on any web server that supports PHP3 or PHP4, without any problems or special requirements. Its user interface is easy to use, with a simple administration panel and a help section always at hand. Its functions include: the administration of medical files, generation of reports, administration of members, roles, etc. More information in http://openclinic.sourceforge.net/openclinic/index.html.

worldview
is a hospital management system. Currently 70% of modules are in Spanish. It can handle small hospitals, even a network of hospitals. Among the most outstanding modules are

  • Management of radiology images, cardiograms, etc.
  • Patient history via web.
  • Management of resident and external doctors
  • Room management, medicine warehouse and can be integrated with the ordering system for laboratory materials.
  • Emergency management, external consultations.

Other specific applications such as odontolinux, a management software for dental offices, written in PHP4 and that uses PostgreSQL as a database manager. More information in http://sourceforge.net/projects/odontolinux/.

I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW MORE ABOUT YOUR SYSTEM, WE ARE A HOSPITAL THAT CURRENTLY HAS 16 ROOMS AND A TOWER OF DOCTORS AND WE ARE IN REMODELING / EXTENSION OF 36 MORE ROOMS, SO WE NEED AN EFFICIENT, FRIENDLY AND ACCESSIBLE SYSTEM. I WAIT FOR INFORMATION, THANK YOU.

The DriCloud software works very well, we are very happy with the system. Everything works from the cloud and is the most compatible that we have ever found, because it works the same for Windows, for Mac, Linux and for all models of mobile phones and iPad, Android.
Although the price is very cheap, it is not free, but you can get it totally free if you accept advertising.
Look at what I tell you and tell me what you think.

I have had Care2x in my clinic for a long time and the truth is that I do not change it for any. It doesn't have many of the things that state-of-the-art software incorporates, but it is very practical and easy to use.

The cloud is designed so that all updates are made on a server in the cloud, so you have to look for a Medical Software. So there is no need to keep computers on all night for maintenance. Each clinic is assured of being up-to-date with medical software, without the complications and risks posed by updates to their own computers.

Anyway, if you want to find the best medical software enter the link that I have marked. It is the best comparison I have seen. So you can make a good decision before buying software for your clinic.
    Luck!
