Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?

All those moments will be lost in time like tears in the rain.
It's time to die"
Roy (the android from Blade Runner)

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?

Written in 1968 by the novelist Philip K. Dick it is undoubtedly one of the best science fiction novels. Located in a post-apocalyptic and destroyed world, abandoned, where technology is omnipresent, humans have already been in charge of eliminating almost all vestige of life on earth, so having and caring for an animal is considered a civic virtue and a symbol of social status, depending on the rarity of the species.

Technology has reached such a development that it is possible to create androids, so similar to humans that in order to differentiate one from the other, they must undergo complicated tests to determine whether it is a human or an artificial being. And it is that even when humanity has made great advances in science, its moral quality remains debatable. The androids they have made want, think and feel the same emotions as their creators but, worst of all, is that within that consciousness they realize that they are being treated like slaves. Many of them escape looking for a better way of life, because it also turns out that many of them are also more intelligent than humans themselves. This fact justifies the creation of a group of mercenaries who hunt down and hunt down fugitive androids called blade runners.

I don't know if androids dream of electric sheep, but what I am sure of is that, at least, the computers I use are part of a collective consciousness that, when they "dream", show me beautiful colors and images formed by hundreds, maybe thousands… I don't know, from other computers that, like mine, also dream. This collective android dream is called Electric sheep and it is one of the beautiful screensavers not only in the world GNU / Linux but in general: each computer with the program installed, regardless of its operating system, has a connection, via the Internet, and all together create a psychedelic of colors and abstract images.

Installing the program is as simple as typing in the terminal  sudo apt-get install electricsheep or download it from the Official SiteThen, it only remains to configure it as our default screensaver.

I've never seen this, I get up and take off my hat ,,,

Original way of presenting such a curious screensaver. What I like the most is that many of those captures remind me of space nebulae, galaxies in their agonizing drift, the unfathomable dark space ...

Regarding Blade Runner, I'm afraid I saw it at a bad time, because it failed to shock me (maybe I should try again). However, the Battlestar Galactica series, which deals with a very similar concept, captivated me from beginning to end in an irredeemable way.

In general, the issue of machines with their own conscience fascinates me, as well as it seems tremendously dangerous, and not because of themselves, but because of the abuses that our species undertakes with everything that surrounds it and that, in the end, they serve to win visceral enmity.

    A greeting.

In a way what I'm trying to show is that as humans we can achieve incredible technological advances, but eventually we end up perverting everything. We talked elav and I think this is a lesson for us: a group of computers share dreams regardless of whether their operating system is Windows, Mac OSX o Linux… While we, beings who presume to be thinkers, fight over it.

We are selfish and violent creatures, capable of the best and the worst. United we could fix many problems that exist in the world, but we prefer to fight for nothing and continue swimming in the conflict. That is why I always question the supposed intelligence that characterizes us, and I equate our moral development to that of grass. Society has dehumanized us, which is still a paradox, and instead of recovering what was lost, we let ourselves be carried away by an overwhelming current in which the good is overshadowed by our misdeeds.

Maybe it's all the fault of the Selfish Gene that Richard Dawkins was talking about; perhaps, after all, we still have a lot to learn and evolve. We will get it? Hope so.

The human being is an incredible creature. Of course, we still have a lot to evolve, to learn, as long as we allow it, because we ourselves are bringing this planet to an end (apparently some are still hoping to find somewhere in the Galaxy to replace it).

Look how we are, that even knowing the evils that affect us, we continue to do the same. A simple example is how we play with our health. We know that cigarettes are harmful to our body, even the packs in which they come have a message that warns us: Smoking damages your health, and even so, we continue to buy them .. I don't, I don't smoke .. ¬¬

And so we are with everything in this life. That is why movies like Wally, I Robot and the like have moved me, where machines prove to be much better than us.

I totally agree. I think that the system alienates us in a certain way, putting money before the value of people. If we lived in a world where development, ecology, antispeciesism, art, human dignity were truly encouraged ... another rooster would sing. So to speak, a "linux" mentality applied to society, in which advances or the "official truth" are not subordinated to economic interests - at least not in an excessively marked way.

It is disheartening to see that there are giant islands of garbage in the oceans and governments and the media pass by; the same with fossil fuels: the alternatives are not profitable, therefore they choose to continue plundering the world's resources. I do not get it. But there are people who see the world in a more positive way, and I hope that, sooner or later, that will allow us to get out of the well and walk towards the future in harmony.

          A greeting :).

During short seconds you can see the Heighway Curve (or dragon fractal), at minute 1:10; and at 1:20 the Mandelbrot dragon appears. I also saw some Julia sets and Strange Attractors-like figures. Many of these are graphs of iterative functions (constant or repetitive) whose plane does not correspond to an integer but a decimal dimension and whose values tend to infinity.

If you want more information than I comment, you can take a look at the wiki 😉

I immediately entered the page and downloaded it, of course. THANKS!

However, the feeling it gives me is very similar to what the novel gave me. The atmosphere created is undoubtedly fascinating but is completely clouded by the feeling of sadness that it produces in each and every one of the chapters. And, although I like Dick I prefer Asimov. 🙂

Maybe I will use it at some point, I do not know, but for now I will continue with the image that I have used for years. A calm, nocturnal sea, with moonlight while in the background appears a coast towards which, at least in dreams, I sail.

After this last paragraph, only the violin music is missing, right? LOL

ESET took the image of the film I Robot 2004 -http: //www.impawards.com/2004/posters/i_robot.jpg- and in turn, the film's image designer was based on the iMacs to create your androids.
