I'm a terminal geek and my favorite games are "roguelike"

By the way that Linux users use the terminal too much, I found it interesting to write about a type of games that not many know: "Rogue-like" (or "rogue like games«). Rogue was a game dungeons and dragons style (yes, like the Devil) only that based entirely on the terminal, without any graphics, and in which what really matters is the history and player imagination.

ArrogantAs I was saying, it's a dungeons and dragons style game created in 1980. It inspired a whole class of spin-off games collectively referred to as roguelikes (lit. rogue-like). Some of the most popular games in this genre are Hack, NetHack, Larn, Moria, ADOM, and Angband.

The best roguelikes place a lot of emphasis on history. Basically, because it is the only way they have to "catch us"; and I assure you that some of them become very addictive once you learn to play reasonably well. Another interesting feature of these types of games is that they are never the same. That is to say, the scenarios are being built at the moment, although there are some lines of history that are preserved. Furthermore, they do not give second chances: here the concept of "lives" does not exist. Once they kill you, you have to start ALL over again; That makes every decision you make, no matter how minimal, very important.

Let's see which are some of the best ...

These games do not have to be difficult to program, although difficult to 'create'. You could put a little tutorial to do it if it is not too difficult.

It's a good idea. The problem is that it would take several posts on the subject and I am not sure if it is worth the time and effort. I mean, I don't think a lot of people are interested. 🙁 Anyway, to see how to make one of these games, it is best to go to the official website, download the source code and gossip. 🙂 Those are the advantages of free software.
    Cheers! Paul.

Okay. But I think in the end it will be difficult.

These games are amazing, super complete. I am a fan of nethack, although I never managed to finish it but I will 🙂
Nethack is considered one of the most difficult and complex games that exist, dwarf fortress is another very complex game, too bad it is not free :(. To comment on some things that make nethack a super complete game, for example: There is a enemy that is a Basilisk (according to mythology it is a creature that kills when making eye contact and if it touches you it turns you into stone), there is also an item that you can find out there that is a towel (yes a towel). things that can be done with the towel is to put it on your head to bandage your eyes, this does not let you see, but at the same time it makes you immune against the basilisk.
Also, if you try to hit the basilisk without wearing gloves or a weapon, by just hitting it you are touching it, with which you are turned into stone!
Once you defeat the basilisk you can rejoin his body! (You must wear gloves otherwise you are turned into stone). And what can be done with the body of the basilisk? Among other things, it can be used as a weapon! and you turn your enemies to stone 😀

And the game is full of this type of thing, there are places where objects fall from the ceiling and if you don't have a helmet on, you're in trouble!

It is good to see a collection of these types of games, and there are many more! The angband is based on Tolkien's books (for whoever you like).

    Regards!

I didn't realize that this genre had the name ROGUELIKE until a few years
For fans of PC RPG it is best to start with
    THE BINDING OF ISAC
    FTL
    DUNGEONS OF DREDMOR
(I don't know if I wrote any of these titles well XD)
at least that's how I started and I don't regret it and it introduced me to the world of what it's like to get into a new map every time you play and always wait for a new challenge so the replayability explodes to the ceiling
But a while ago I was encouraged to play games with less animations but more content
and I don't regret it at all
I continued with the THOME, DUNGEON CRAWL STONE SOUP, ROGUE SURVIVOR, DOOM RL….
They are all games that are excellent to introduce you to roguelikes a little more complex and you can almost fully get into those with ACII interface
I confess that I am not encouraged to explore these paths much but I cannot leave the NETHACK and the ADOM
Great games that have a complexity that can only be appreciated by experiencing them for yourself
very good post and thanks for the recommendations!

What times playing these things via telnet and the like, nothing compared to those of now, a lot of graphics and little chicha (^_^)

post like this are needed more often to promote the CLI and more demonstrating that we also play with it literally xD

I love these games, in fact I think I'm going to start programming one. Last I do it in C ++ and I put together a compilation for Win / DOS and one for UNIX / Linux, basically I change ncurses to pdcurses depending on the OS and that's it.

I'm doing one but with 16-bit retro-style graphics, see have more or less 200 bosses and it will be the player's choice to face them.
