Linux desktop users continue to grow, while Windows users slowly decline

This year, it will be the year of Linux ... How many times have we not heard or read this phrase that has remained only promises and illusions for Linux lovers. And is that for a long time Linux has been in an uphill battle against Microsoft to prevail in the desktop computer industry.

During the last 12 years, Linux has registered an average annual growth of 10,92% compared to -1,95% per year for Windows, so if the numbers continue in the same way, Linux could finally triumph around 2057.

These results are from Statcounter statistics, cOn which the progression of the market share of each operating system per year can be calculated and that for its part Linux should take the lead in terms of market share in 2057 if the current trend is maintained.

And even if it sounds very promising, so far Linux has rarely crossed the 3% market share mark. Sometimes it goes up to 4% if you include ChromeOS. According to the latest figures released by Statcounter, the operating system is at 2,4%. MacOS is in second place (16,15%) and Windows continues to lead the race with 76,13%.

Although these figures may be somewhat overwhelming, we must take into account that most equipment manufacturers original (OEM) They ship Windows 10 on most of their systems by default.

While for its part Apple is one of the few companies that tries to compete directly against Windows 10. This could explain the second place of Apple's desktop operating system in the ranking. However, the situation is changing for Linux on this axis known as tied selling.

The economic war between China and the United States is accelerating the rate of Linux pre-installation in computers by computer manufacturers. Due to this tense situation between the two countries, Lenovo continues to embrace Linux.

Historically, Lenovo has always certified only certain products with a limited subset of hardware requirements for users implementing Linux on a desktop or mobile workstation.

The company is now expanding its certification offering to various models of consumer computers ThinkPad X, T and also L series computers will come pre-installed with Ubuntu 18.04.

For its part, Dell has the 13 Dell XPS 2020 Developer Edition which is available for just over $ 1,000 with Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, the result of the long-standing partnership between Canonical and Dell under the Sputnik project. Thus, the American company finds Lenovo among the few in the market making inroads into the field of hardware delivered with Linux pre-installed. This is said to be a necessary prerequisite for the famous open source operating system to hope to beat the Windows family of operating systems in the desktop industry.

Strictly speaking, Linux is its kernel, that is, the part of the OS that manages the computer's resources and serves as a communication bridge between the different components (hardware and software); it is the invisible part of the operating system. In a broad sense, speak of Linux is to refer to any operating system that is based on that kernel; This is one of the aspects that makes this OS unique, since the user can choose from 319 variations or distributions if he sticks to the list of LiveCDs.

Linus himself admits that this is why the operating system is struggling to establish itself in the desktop computer industry. It is in response to this situation that KDE and GNOME have decided to work hand in hand to establish an ecosystem of applications that transcends the various distributions and creates a market opening for all.

Added to this are the hardware compatibility issues faced by new users of the operating system. In figures, 13,1% of the third parts of this lot find it due to obsolete cores in the distributions.

Even so with everything and this Linux continues in the fight to win more desktop users, since on the part of Linux servers it is still the king.
