Free Software – The U.S. Social Security Administration reverses identity verification policy that hinders freedom

In a victory for free software activists, the U.S. Social Security Administration has announced that it has reversed its planned usage policy that would require using a website that doesn't respect freedom or that would require a person to go in person to an office. For more details, the story of what happened originated when theOn March 18, 2025, the United States Social Security Administration (SSA) announced that, as of March 31, 2025, any procedure requiring proof of identity must be completed in person or through its website for managing information related to Social Security (My Social Security (MSS). However, two days before the deadline extended (April 14), the SSA completely reversed the new policy and will instead “allow individuals to complete all types of complaints by telephone, supported by new anti-fraud features designed to protect beneficiaries and optimize the customer experience.”

DragonFly belongs to the same class of operating systems as other BSD and Linux-derived systems. It is based on the same ideals and APIs as UNIX and shares predecessor code with other BSD operating systems. DragonFly offers the opportunity for the BSD foundation to grow in a completely different direction than that taken by the FreeBSD, NetBSD, and OpenBSD series. DragonFly includes numerous useful features that set it apart from other operating systems in its class. Most notable is the use of HAMMER2, its own modern, high-performance file system with fast snapshots (with mount and write capabilities), compression, and deduplication. And another, the use of virtual cores that allow a complete core to run as a user process to manage resources or to accelerate core development and debugging. Read more about DragonFly
