Free Software – The OSAID erodes the meaning of «open source»
According to Bradley M. Kuhn, the Open Source Initiative (OSI) definition for The so-called Open Source Artificial Intelligence Definition (OSAID) does not give freedom to users. And that is why, ydUnfortunately for the free software movement, OSAID has one particularly fatal oversight: It does not require reproducibility for large language models. Which, yesand adds to the inherent and already known problems with the term "open source" itself with respect to free software. It should be noted that it is officially known that eThe OSI’s stated reasoning for releasing this weak and sloppy definition now is based on the belief that “it made no sense to publish a definition that no existing AI system could currently meet.”
According to Kuhn and other characters, the OSI andIn its rush to capitalize on the hype and be used by industry, it makes the fatal mistake of leaving freedom behind and widens the gap between “open source” and freedom. Read more on the FSF Blog
Open Source – OSI Announces Release of Industry's First Open Source AI Definition
This October 28th, and after a year-long global community design process, the official and final document on the Open Source Artificial Intelligence Definition (OSAID) v.1.0 is available for public use. And the launch was announced at the All Things Open 2024 Conference, which aims to address common issues of interest to the global open source community. According to the OSI and other organizations and individuals, OSAID seeks to provide a standard by which public, open, community-led assessments will be conducted to validate whether or not an AI system can be considered an open source AI. And precisely, this first stable version of OSAID is the result of several years of research and collaboration, an international workshop tour, and a year-long co-design process between relevant actors in the global open source arena.
“The co-design process that led to Open Source AI Definition Version 1.0 was well developed, thorough, inclusive and fair,” said Carlo Piana, OSI Board Chair. “We adhered to the principles set forth by the board, and OSI leadership and staff followed our directives faithfully. The Board is confident that the process has resulted in a definition that meets Open Source standards as defined in the Open Source Definition and the Four Essential Freedoms, and we are excited about how this definition positions OSI to facilitate meaningful, practical Open Source guidance for the entire industry.” Read more on the OSI Blog
