The new Raspberry Pi 2 arrives: more powerful and at the same price (35 USD)

What is the Raspberry Pi 2?

For those unfamiliar with it Raspberry Pi, it is a computer the size of a credit card that runs Linux (and Windows 10 from the new Raspberry Pi 2, see below), created with the intention of promoting computer science education in schools and other institutes teaching. A wide variety of Linux distributions are available for Raspberry Pi, such as Raspbian (Debian Wheezy), Pidora (Fedora remix), OpenELEC, and RaspBMC (XBMC Media Center) and Arch Linux.

Features of the new Raspberry Pi 2 Model B

The new Raspberry Pi 2 Model B features a more powerful CPU (900 MHz quad-core ARM Cortex-A7) and twice the RAM memory than the old Model B + (1GB LPDDR2 SDRAM).

Other than that, the old B + model and the new Raspberry Pi 2 are almost the same (they both include 4 USB ports, a microSD card connector, an Ethernet port, and an HDMI 1.3 and 1.4 audio / video connector. The most interesting thing is that both Raspberry Pi are fully compatible: the connectors are all in the same place, they have the same functionality and both Raspberry Pi work with only 5V of current (even though version 2 has a much more powerful processor).

Let's remember that one of the biggest criticisms the Raspberry Pi had received was its poor performance when running more modern applications. The increase in memory and the use of a more powerful processor, without affecting the final price or the compatibility with the programs designed for the previous Raspberry Pi models, comes to pay off this debt with the community. What is the real impact of these changes on the final performance of the applications? Well, this varies between applications, but its manufacturers estimate that the Raspberry Pi 2 is, on average, 6 times faster than the old B + model ... and even plays HD videos.

Furthermore, the announcement mentions that thanks to its ARMv7 processor, the new Pi can run "the full range of ARM Linux distributions, including Snappy Ubuntu Core" (a package for NOOBS will be available in the next few weeks), "as well as Microsoft Windows. 10 ». Furthermore, the Rasperry Pi Foundation has been working closely with Microsoft to bring Windows 10 to the new Raspberry Pi 2 for free.

What will happen to the old Raspberry Pi models?

Apparently they will continue to be sold as long as there is demand. Regarding the possible launch of a Raspberry Pi 2 Model A, at the moment there are no plans in this regard, at least until the end of 2015.

Excellent news, I was just about to buy the B +, but I'll wait for this one, which is clearly much better.

    I want a torrent server + NAS.

It's time to wait or order it over the internet !!

    Greetings.

Be careful, that is the price without the case, without the SD, without the charger, so they must add a couple of dollars to it, personally as I do not program, like most of those who buy the raspaberri, make no mistake, I prefer the work that he is making intel with the meego pad t01, which is a complete computer, with an intel x86_64 processor, 2GB of ram and 32 GB of storage… which is compatible with win8, and android, and with Linux 🙂 [at least I have already seen it with ubuntu, something that should work on any distro because it uses intel components]

I did not know it, it really is very good, of course, much more expensive than the R-Pi, but with a much better and complete hardware, since at the end of the day, the R-Pi, if you start buying accessories, goes up quite the price.

      Thanks for the information.

      Greetings.

When I renew the pc, one of these will fall for the download server, the light is prohibitive in Españistam.

LOL!! Españistam poh won !! Anyway, here in Chile the issue of electric current goes the same way, they filled their mouths with a deficit to build thermoelectric plants and it turns out that now, electricity is sold to Argentina, I do not say that it is bad, but hydro and thermoelectric plants damaging the ecosystem both in the south and in the coastal sector, nothing for the powerful to be now disgustingly powerful and rich.

I think that «» 5V current »is not adequate, it is« 5V DC Voltage »since the current for the Raspberry Pi B is 500mA
