The new version of Proxmox VE 6.1, the specialized distro for virtual servers, has already been released

Proxmox-VE-6.1

In a previous post we talk about liberation de Proxmox Gateway  a specialized service for email traffic monitoring and now a few days later the launch of the new version of the Linux distribution "Proxmox Virtual Environment 6.1".

This is a specialized distribution based on Debian, intended for deploy and maintain virtual servers using LXC and KVM and it can act as a replacement for products such as VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V, and Citrix XenServer.

What's new in Promox VE 6.1?

With the arrival of this new version of the distro, as mentioned it is based on Debian and with this release the package base is in sync with Debian 10.2. The Linux kernel has been updated to version 5.3. Additionally comes the Linux 5.0 kernel based on Ubuntu 19.04 packages with ZFS support. Updated versions of Ceph Nautilus 14.2.4.1, Corosync 3.0, LXC 3.2, QEMU 4.1.1, and ZFS 0.8.2.

Changes to the web interface

Through the graphical interface, more configuration parameters can now be edited at the data center level, including two-factor authentication settings and cluster-level bandwidth limits for the following types of traffic: migration, backup / restore, cloning, disk move.

They also stand out diverses Two-factor authentication improvements to use the TOTP dongle. Whereas for the mobile graphical interface: a login for user accounts with support for TOTP two-factor authentication has been implemented.

Work continued on converting raster icons to Font Awesome vector formats and the NoVNC scaling mode can now be changed in the "My Settings" section.

Changes in the container

Of the changes that stand out in the ad is that changes can now be made to the running container and will be applied after the next container recharge as well as you can restart a working container via the GUI, API and from the command line interface (CLI).

In Proxmox VE 6.1 support for recent versions of the different Linux distributions like Fedora 31, CentOS 8 and Ubuntu 19.10.

QEMU improvements

Stands out a new reset API call which allows pending changes to be applied without waiting for the guest to shut down before starting over.

Also QEMU guest agent support and enhancements are highlighted, that use an ISA serial port (not VirtIO) for communication, which, among other things, will allow the use of QEMU guest agents on FreeBSD.

Fixed a QEMU monitor timeout issue which prevented successful backups in certain configurations.

Added "tags" in the guest systems configuration. This meta information can be useful for things like configuration management (not supported in the GUI yet).

Of the other changes that stand out:

  • VM / CT: Purge learned to remove the corresponding virtual machine or container from replication jobs or backups when it is destroyed.
  • Various upstream errors were identified and corrected (in collaboration with corosync and kronosnet).
  • Fixed issues that some users encountered when changing MTU.
  • pmxcfs was audited using ASAN (AddressSanitizer) and UBSAN (Undefined Behavior Sanitizer), as a result of which several potential issues were fixed for certain edge cases.
  • You are allowed to configure non-standard "mount point" properties for ZFS.
  • You can use .img files as an alternative to .iso images.
  • Various iSCSI enhancements.
  • Redesigned ZFS support in iSCSI with the LIO target provider.
  • Support is provided for all the features offered by the new kernels with Ceph and KRBD.
