Ubuntu-26.04-LTS-Apps

Recently, Canonical announced the official release of "Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS" , the first point maintenance update for the "Resolute Raccoon" series.

This major release consolidates the basic stabilization phase of the operating system . By integrating hundreds of security updates and bug fixes accumulated since its original release in April, this version drastically reduces the time and bandwidth required for fresh installations. Furthermore, this release formally enables the upgrade path for users still running on the previous branch, Ubuntu 24.04 LTS.

This version continues Ubuntu's proud tradition of integrating the latest and
the best open source technologies in a high-quality and easy-to-use Linux.

Updated software and expanded hardware support

It's important to note that, although the .1 versions (first update point) don't introduce a new HWE (Hardware Enablement) core, they do include a massive number of updated packages . Among the updated software components in this release are GTK 4.22.4, LibreOffice 26.2.5, snapd 2.76.1, and libadbita 1.9.1.

The desktop environment also receives timely updates with GDM 50.1, Nautilus 50.2.2, the GNOME Control Center 50.3, and the accessibility and document applications Orca 50.2 and Papers 50.2. In terms of security and isolation, the system updates AppArmor to version 5.0.2.

In terms of hardware compatibility, the update integrates new critical driver packages , among which the inclusion of NVIDIA's proprietary graphics drivers in their 580.159.03 and 595.71.05 branches stands out , as well as audio support for the ALC4080 codec used in the advanced NVIDIA GB300 platform.

It is also mentioned that firmware files have been added for the Cypress 43439 Wi-Fi chip and updates for the integrated sound amplifiers in Lenovo (Cirrus Amps) and Dell (Cirrus CS35L56) laptops . Regarding peripherals and development boards, a driver for the egis_etu905 fingerprint scanner has been incorporated, along with support for Elan and Synaptic touchpads, and compatibility with the DeepComputing FML13V05 and SpacemiT K3 CoM260 IFX boards.

The future of Ubuntu 26.04 LTS and upcoming updates

Users looking for a Linux kernel upgrade and a new graphics stack will have to wait until February 2027 , the scheduled release date for Ubuntu 26.04.2 LTS. This future update will include the Hardware Enablement Stack (HWE), presumably importing the Linux 7.2 kernel and the Mesa 26.2 graphics stack from the next interim release, Ubuntu 26.10 (Stonking Stingray), scheduled for autumn.

One new feature that will differentiate Ubuntu 26.04.2 from previous LTS branches is its focus on virtualization . In addition to the kernel and graphics drivers, this update plans to include updated versions of key virtualization infrastructure components through dedicated HWE packages. This will encompass updates for the qemu-hwe hypervisor, the libvirt-hwe management toolkit, the edk2-hwe OVMF firmware, and the seabios-hwe BIOS compatibility layer.

For Ubuntu 24.04 LTS users, the An automatic update to version 26.04.1 LTS will appear in the Update Manager. A couple of weeks after this release, once some regressions identified in recent versions of rust-coreutils are resolved. Those who wish to force the update immediately can do so using the command do-release-upgrade -d In the terminal.

It's worth mentioning that this same maintenance update has been rolled out simultaneously to all official Ubuntu flavors, including Kubuntu, Ubuntu Budgie, Lubuntu, Ubuntu Kylin, Ubuntu Studio, Xubuntu, Edubuntu, and Ubuntu Cinnamon.

It's important to note that these new ISO images are designed exclusively for new deployments. Systems already running Ubuntu 26.04 will receive all updates through the standard update manager. Support for this LTS version will continue until April 2031, with the option to extend it for an additional 10 years through the Ubuntu Pro service.
