A new software center for Fedora?

El Ubuntu Software CenterWhile it is still too "heavy" and has a few tidbits that need to be polished, it is a step in the right direction. Not only because it will be one of the foundations of business model of Canonical to "sell" programs and make money but also because it gives you a professional, unique and modern touch to distribution.

The boys of Fedora they are thinking that time to replace to the old and never well weighted Synaptic.

There is an active discussion on in the fedora mailing list, relative to a Fedora Linux "Software Center".

A new Fedora contributor, Giovanni Campagna, sparked a discussion about creating a Fedora software hub. He acknowledges that there are good user interfaces for package management (GPK-app and Apper), but nothing really in tune with the Ubuntu Software Center. He was even encouraged to suggest that the Ubuntu Software Center be ported to Fedora.

The comments thus far have been mixed with some Fedora developers saying that there is no reason to have a Software Center or App Store and that it is just a fad.

Should you embark on this endeavor, the folks at Fedora have a great challenge ahead of them: copying the good stuff from the Ubuntu Software Center and making it lightweight, easy to use, and more dynamic.

Ubuntu-style software center? Mmmmm…. It seems to me that the friend Giovanni did not take into account the philosophy of Fedora, I doubt very much (perhaps I am wrong) that the people of this excellent Project offer a download center with paid software; now, if it could be possible with only free and free software.

Well, I do not deny that to attract newcomers to the distro is not bad at all, I must admit. But keep in mind that Fedora is not made directly for the ordinary user as such; it is simple to use, with a powerful and easy-to-use package manager (pacman or yaourt style) but it is not directly a "friendly" distro like ubuntu. Be careful, I say "friendly" because ubuntu sometimes causes problems that screw you up and if you don't read a bit before installing Fedora you stay on the wheels without knowing how to do anything xD

Likewise, Fedora is not as difficult as before. I have it as final for 4 versions, and it is becoming more friendly. Although, on second thought, perhaps it seems to me because I already took his hand and I solve several of the problems that may arise quickly. Anyway, I find it much less troublesome than before.

    I think it's great.
Most of the users that I know who start on GNU / linux (especially Ubuntu); it is because they are looking for something better than Windows (without so many viruses, reboots, just out of curiosity, etc., but few because of ideology). For this reason, it is necessary to provide them with the necessary interface so that they can carry out their same activities more easily and with some features such as those offered by Windows.
Personally, I use Ubuntu, because I like its notification system, the software center, the installer that allows me to install third-party software from installation and thus remain functional at startup; something that other distributions do not have. Small details make the difference, Ubuntu has understood that well, not for nothing has it become the most popular distribution. In fact I know people disinterested in the subject, but who at some point have heard of Ubuntu.

It seems to me that Apper is very good, although the guys from fedora want to make a Software Center to make the distro more friendly, well be it, but please do not incorporate the one from ubuntu, I think it is better to have an own development, tailored for distribution.
