Hi friends of desdelinux. Net.
For a long time I have been using Fedora with XFCE on my desktop PCs and my laptop, replacing Debian both on my PC's and my laptop and on my company's servers with CentOS.
It is important to say that given change was due to a need precisely in the servers and since I had to get used to another way of working (yum, configuration files etc ...) I precisely changed the PC's and the laptop to Fedora with XFCE as it was my favorite desk: D.
I must say that both CentOS and Fedora go like silk, and since how to configure CentOS I already talked in one of my previous posts This time I will focus on Fedora, as many are afraid of it or believe that it is not that easy to use.
In addition, Fedora is one of the most up-to-date linux distros so we will not lack the latest versions of all packages but unlike rolling release distros these packages have been sufficiently tested to not have concerns when updating as happens to more than one in rolling distros ..
Some images of my Fedora with XFCE:
Without further ado, let's get to it:
Download Fedora with XFCE:
Download and install RPMFusion repository:
http://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/rpmfusion-free-release-19.noarch.rpm
y
http://download1.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/fedora/rpmfusion-nonfree-release-19.noarch.rpm
It is installed with a double click by entering the superuser password and accepting everything.
Now all the following steps must be done as root of the system. To do this open the terminal and write:
su
(enter your superuser password)
Update the system:
yum update
Programs to delete:
yum remove claws-mail midori abiword
(It is an email client, a web browser and a text editor not necessary since we are going to install Firefox, Thunderbird and Libreoffice)
Essential programs to install:
yum install java-1.7.0-openjdk flash-plugin icedtea-web firefox thunderbird unrar zip unzip p7zip vlc libreoffice gimp wget mc file-roller
Codecs:
yum install gstreamer gstreamer-plugins-good gstreamer-plugins-bad gstreamer-plugins-ugly gstreamer-ffmpeg
Programs to complete (optional):
yum install transmageddon filezilla pitivi
Enable ssh (optional):
systemctl start sshd
(The service starts)
systemctl enable sshd
(Enables the service start at system startup)
Change the hostname and hosts of the system (optional):
nano /etc/hostname
We replace what appears to us by the name we want the system to have (in my case Peter-xfce) and we save with CTRL + O and close with CTRL + X
nano /etc/hosts
here we leave it as follows:
127.0.0.1 the_hostname_choose localhost :: 1 the_hostname_choose6 localhost6
in my case:
127.0.0.1 peter-xfce localhost :: 1 peter-xfce6 localhost6
We save with CTRL + O and we close with CTRL + x
And voila .. With this they have a Fedora prepared for more than general use and they have already seen that it is not difficult at all: D.
Do not forget to comment 😀
I always wanted to install Fedora, but when installing GRUB it gave me a kernel panic. And even though I installed the loader from live, I could never get it to work. I am going to deal with Fedora 20.
For the love of Dior, Ubuntu? LOL.
Weird your case .. I the only kernel panic that I saw in linux came precisely from Ubuntu. Never on Debian, CentOS, Fedora, Slackware, Arch and openSUSE 🙂
the truth is that fedora 18 the first month gave some scary kernel panics ... 17 was even and fedora 19 is the same, like silk.
What brand of mainboard do you have? If your motherboard and / or processor does not support PAE, then you will have to buy another one that does (in general, most should support it).
It is a 2010 laptop and it supports pae.

how is xfce going with compiz? I'm happy that it has glide effect and minimized and maximized. those are all the effects i use in fedora kde.
Compiz works fine as it is :) .. It is so easy to install it with yum install compiz
Very good tuto. What's more, I think CentOS deserves to be enjoyed as it should be, but many sacrifice stability for the latest.
PS: I am using Debian because at least you receive help even in the most remote corners of Cuba.
Of course, as if in Fedora we did not help anyone. You make me laugh!! 🙂
I agree .. there is so much help on the net 😀
As far as I know, Cubans and those from other nations embargoed by the USA do not help. Also, centos support is null, red hat support is paid
Hello, I think you mean the payment support of RHEL, but CentOS is supported .. There are updates, who wiki and a lot of info on the internet, which you pay for if you RHEL .. That's why many users go to CentOS which gives support the community. The same thing happens in Fedora ... the support is the community and not a Red Hat call center: D.
I challenge you to give me proof, just one, that Fedora does not help people from those countries you are saying! I think you are repeating like a parrot, without knowing about things, and without living them. Cheers!
Since eliotime3000's comment does not come out, I'll put it here

@diazepam:
It's been a long time since my comment came out, but you hadn't noticed it well because I used the href tag for the links.
@eliot
Your comment was not yet approved when I made this.
@ Germán:
Here is your professional with bonus included.
Hahaha… just come to me with that? It is what I said, they are repeating like a parrot without knowing about things. I want you to tell me your own experiences, not to repeat falsehoods that others publish out there. I know very well who published that, and I take it as who it comes from, something totally false and misrepresented. With all due respect, I thought you guys were smarter, but hey, that's how prejudiced humans are. A hug to you both! 🙂
Well in the license agreement it says that the people of the irc channel can refuse to give you support if you are from a country seized by usa. It would be necessary to see what the American Fed says.
Che, first he treats them to navos and then German sends them a hug, one thing:
And to all Fedora: no exiti's papa !! Stamina debian, madness and passion !!
PS: Listen to what the fans sing: "You're a Red Hat beta-tester" "Your community seems like a private country" "Debian town, Debian town"
@philip:
It is on the Fedora wiki where it is said that RH cannot support embargoed nations, not Fedora. Anyway, I invite you to check it YOURSELF. I am not giving you a fan response, but I am telling you what the facts are like in reality. I am in favor of GNU / Linux and therefore of all distros and free software. But for our world to work, we have to be authentic and true. If we are going to comment, it is not a question of saying what anyone says in a blog out there. Hugs!!
@the debian fan:
First, I did not disrespect anyone, nor did I try to "turnip" anyone. I'm having a healthy discussion with these blog guys.
Second, I know who you are.
Third, I love GNU / Linux, be it Debian, Fedora, etc.
Fourth, ???.
Regards!!
For one who wants to experience the latest without having to be on the razor's edge (see Arch), Fedora would be fine. But if you want 100% stability, RHEL / CentOS is better.
Look at me when using Debian stable, testing, CentOS and Fedora I can tell you that Fedora is more stable than Debian testing being more updated ..
It is the perfect distro if you are looking for updates on all packages without reaching the extreme of rolling distros with its drawbacks :) ..
Well, I've had a bad experience with .rpm packages, so I usually have some differences with some distros that tend to be like Fedora. Maybe I am encouraged to try Fedora, but I would use FedoraRussian so it has a more complete support (Skype, codecs,…).
And by the way, Slackware is the distro that has surprised me the most with the quality of stability and handling it has (oddly enough, Slackware is very on par with Fedora and the like, although it is not updated very often).
This very good fedora, the one I like the most is with kde. With gnome3 I didn't like it very much. With Mate and compiz I noticed it a bit unstable, with xfce I need to test well.
It would be nice if they did some characteristic artwork like mint, ubuntu and opensuse, I think the xfce was peeling the last time I installed it. XD And I don't like customizing myself, not because I am lazy but because I don't like my creations. Like any artist XD haha
Thanks a lot :).
Fedora doesn't actually say in the eula that it won't support you. What it tells you is that it may not give you .. You download it without problems, install it and download the updates just like anyone in the world .. The same happens in CentOS, Debian and any distro.
Gee @ eliotime3000, believe me when I tell you that I live in a remote corner of Cuba, and look, I wear Fedora. It is true that somewhere they say that they cannot support me for X or Y reason that is irrelevant, but that does not prevent me from using this magnificent distro.
I am very happy that you use Fedora and do not get carried away by the comments of people who do not know what they are saying and speak out of prejudice only. If you ever need help, you can find me on IRC (skytux) and if I know I will help you. The same with any other member of the IRC channels, no one is going to deny you anything. Unless, of course, they are not available for personal and / or work reasons. Hugs!! 🙂
Same here: D. Anyone can ask me for help in my email: petercheco@hotmail.es
@petercheco: it would be nice if you joined the Fedora channels on IRC 🙂
Sooooo good post… .. and how's font smoothing going in Fedora?
@German
Well why not: D. You have to get some kind of invitation or you can register directly. I would appreciate a link. Thanks 😀
@ jamin-samuel
The font smoothing is very good .. Just try the livecd and you will see 😀
@petercheco
Install an IRC client (I recommend XChat) and enter the freenode server, which is where the Fedora channels are.
The channels in Spanish that I recommend are: # fedora-latam and # project-fedora.
For more info: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/How_to_use_IRC.
Hugs!! 🙂
Thanks a lot! that's what makes a distro, its community, great, and not whoever is behind it legally. The same I say, any way I have to help them, because they can find me almost daily in http://gutl.jovenclub.cu .
Greetings all.
Kudos !! @German and @petercheco.
This excellent.
I have a problem, with the audio, where in any distro, there are like two volume controls.
If I use the speakers it has a% volume and if I put the headphones it has another% volume, where if I remove the headphones it returns to the% of the speakers.
How can I do this?
I install fedora plus xfce
Above leave the links for Fedora with XFCE and it installs itself :).
That happened to me with Windows Vista / 7/8, in Linux it has never happened to me.
I solved this in Arch and they should have installed both alsa and pulseaudio, but in fedora I can't.
No, I loved fedora, in less than 30 min of installation, it is already 99% working
I agree perfectly with you. In Windows NT 6.X, there is that blessed problem in certain occasions that you installed it with the Realtek audio (the one that comes by default in many PC's).
In Fedora with XFCE there is only one control .. Both for speakers and headphones.
What I want is to have the 2 controls.
You put 32 bits to the iso link for 64 bits.
You will not be able to install the flash-plugin unless you have the Adobe repo enabled.
Regards!
Thank you, I forgot 🙂
I can't edit the post so I leave the Adobe repos in the comments and as for the Fedora 64 bit link button I hope the superuser will rename it ..
In order to install Flash, you need to install the Adobe repository:
32 bit:
yum install http://linuxdownload.adobe.com/adobe-release/adobe-release-i386-1.0-1.noarch.rpm -y
64 bit:
yum install http://linuxdownload.adobe.com/adobe-release/adobe-release-x86_64-1.0-1.noarch.rpm -y
Then you will find the flash-plugin package available in the repos 🙂
In Debian, you only install a package that gives you a script that as soon as it finishes installing, runs and downloads the Flash Player Tarball and configures it by itself based on the architecture you have just by doing this command (having the contrib branches and non-free activated, of course):
apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree
And if one wants to update it, the following is done:
update-flashplugin-nonfree -install
As simple as that.
Yes, but you must tweak the repos in the same way (add contrib non-free). Adding the repo in Fedora as new versions come out is updated with the Fedora update command: yum update
Ah good. The retouching is done only once, and the update is by a script. Also, the Flash plugin is downloaded directly from Adobe.
I used Fedora for a long time with KDE, but I don't know why with Fedora 19 after a few weeks of use the machine gets dense and goes backwards, now I'm with Xfce manjaro and it's going well, I plan to change the disk, because I think that the drama comes out there and I'm going to put Fedora with Xfce, but Kwin as a window manager that looks great (so I have it in manjaro) the only thing that I would lack is to be able to make dockbarx work in fedora so it is complete.
I clarify the machine is an I5 2410M with 4gb of ram and an integrated Intel 4500Hd
Man, his thing would be to show how to do it with graphical tools, if not what anyone is going to think is that Fedora is indeed a difficult distro xD.
Something that is not said much about Fedora and that seems to me a great point in its favor is that it is the only distro that we could consider "nice" that has a decent netinstall. Decent means that it can be connected via Wi-Fi and also allows you to install a large number of programs. I totally recommend installing via netinstall. You install a large number of programs that do not come in the livecd and you save the subsequent mega update.
Another thing that I recommend is to install the free and nonfree repositories of russianfedora. There are packages like Chromium, Flash, Sun Java, Opera, etc. It's very good. Quite a hidden gem:
http://mirror.yandex.ru/fedora/russianfedora/russianfedora/free/fedora/russianfedora-free-release-stable.noarch.rpm
http://mirror.yandex.ru/fedora/russianfedora/russianfedora/nonfree/fedora/russianfedora-nonfree-release-stable.noarch.rpm'
Even with the mega update after installing they are nothing thanks to the delta packages .. Look at updates from Debian, Arch, Ubuntu etc ...
Long live Fedora and CentOS 😀
Slackware Rules!
I have used Fedora on my dell laptop , and everything has gone very well, it is fast, stable and always has updates of the different programs.
Only once I had problems with the kernel panic, I do not remember which version if 17 or 18, but after investigating and configuring the grub I solved it (the detail is that I had it together with mint and Windows).
In fact I am waiting for version 20 to come out to reinstall it.
A query, does anyone know how to install dockbarx? because I found some things on the Internet, but I can't install it and it's a very good dock.
Thank you
32 bit:
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/zhonghuaren/Fedora_19/i686/dockbarx-0.43-5.1.i686.rpm
64 bit:
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/zhonghuaren/Fedora_19/x86_64/dockbarx-0.43-5.1.x86_64.rpm
Thank you boss !!, but I tried that one and it does not install it, it is more it gives you a quilombo of dependencies haha
Very good distro and goes great with Gnome shell.
I just installed it this morning testing the user agent
I will try Fedora 20 64bit on the desktop computer, I see that it is a good alternative to ubuntu and the like.
Thank you so much, I served a lot
Flawless friend, thank you!
