AMD (ATI) and its eternal problems

Since I passed from Windows 7 to my first Linux it was practically a year ago and unfortunately I had to deal with a card ATI (AMD) which has caused me more than one headache, causing strong envy towards users who have a NVIDIA or even one Intel integrated.

Recognizing that drivers free Radeon they are decent for a desktop computer, I also recognize that they can be dangerous for a laptop, for example my laptop can easily reach 99 degrees with these drivers and unfortunately for laptop users we can only use the drivers Catalyst, which have improved a lot since the first time I tried them (11.4 May) but still do not reach the sole of women's shoes NVIDIA.

Users ATI we vehemently demand that we can enjoy dignified support, that it is not just words, just promises, we want some drivers that serve to play a high definition movie without overloading the CPU, we want the xvba-video library to really work like vdpau for users of NVIDIA, I don't think it's too much to ask, to have decent GPU acceleration, even if it was only half of what you can enjoy in Windows.

It's a shame that my Radeon HD 4650 of 1GB looks like a graph of 10 euros, really a shame, I sincerely hope that for this year that is about to come, AMD can put the batteries and make us change our minds to all linuxers and that their graphics can really be an alternative.

I will buy one Intel, and what will you do?

I will buy my computer by parts, I do not have money to buy it all at once, so first I bought the motherboard and the ram and this end of the month, the intel i5 with integrated graphics.

It is the best, so you choose the parts that have maximum compatibility and you do not pay licenses for things that you are not going to use

Hello, Gaara. I also salute Pandev and hope that more people who want to share their knowledge (through blog articles) link to Desdelinux.

Thanks for the article, Pandev. To answer your question, I would like to buy the best Core i7 next year, with integrated graphics card, but I will have to save a lot. I think it is a worthwhile investment, I would have a computer for a long time. I want to dedicate myself to creating and editing videos, but my Sony VAIO laptop from October 2006 does not measure up. Of course, for everything else it works perfectly for two years that I started using Linux. Right now I'm writing from the mini-laptop, which came with Güindous 7 "starter", and without thinking twice I took it off, ha ha ha.

for something nvidia bears that name ... in GNU / Linux environments it is by far the best.

Well, I have never had problems with the ati 5450 (desktop) and the catalyst drivers. Although the performance and temperature are noted that they are not up to par.
    I currently use version 11.11.

What processor do you have? I have an amd turion x2 and if I see a full hd these two cores fire at 100%, on the other hand with vlc in windows it consumes 1%

I have an Intel that is starting to age ...
I have been testing a fullhd video and it goes at 50-70%. But the drivers do not disappoint me (although they could improve a lot and a lot). Hold on long enough to play X-plane 9 with not very high graphics but enough.

I fully agree with the article. I remember when I wanted to try Gnome-Shell, it was a complete disaster, so I put the drivers free and could fry an egg on my laptop, so I went back to Catalyst and ran away from Gnome-Shell like the devil. I don't know how the ATI behaves on windows, but on Linux it leaves a lot to be desired.

I tried using Ubuntu 10.10 on live cd, on a cheap but decent machine that I recently acquired. It has an e350 processor with a radeon 6310 and I don't load unity. To my surprise Lubuntu did load the desktop. I have several intel machines with the 945 chipset and if I have managed to see hd movies up to 720px, of course with vlc and closing everything. I almost always look for hd in 486px and the truth is they are not a blessing. Apart from the cards I have also struggled with proprietary codecs of real media, which have no equivalent in linux.

I also fight against an ATI on my xD laptop and I have it worse than you because ATI stopped offering support for my card so I cannot use the Catalyst drivers, I go with the free ones, the truth is, they have improved a lot, but there is still work . I hope that for the next version of Kubuntu my laptop will have to try less to do depending on what things xP

    Regards!!

      This sounds familiar…. HAHA.
At home I have an Ati Radeon 9250 ... the WORST that Ati has made for Linux users ¬_¬

Check the forums of any distro, you will read that the Ati Radeon 9200 is disgusting, well ... the 9250 is even WORSE !!!

I have a computer with an Ati Radeon 9200 se, Someone could recommend a distro for this type of graphics. that comes with a desktop environment that consumes little resources. (Xfce, lxde, or the Openbox window manager) Thanks.
