An interesting experiment done by an Italian

An interesting experiment done by an Italian user of KDE; Luca Tringali, who wanted to see if people would really notice the difference between two different operating systems; GNU / Linux y Windows.

Well, if you look a bit at the video (which is in Italian, but subtitled in English, although it doesn't matter, the Italian is understandable) you may notice that the experiment is simple: show people Kubuntu and tell him that he is the new Windows 8 and ask them for a rating from 1 to 10. All the people gave a rating between 7 and 9, only one of them knew that it was Kubuntu really and did not give his rating; everyone else commented on things like "it's cleaner, simpler, and feels lighter and more intuitive," and after Luca told them it was about Kubuntu And not from Windows 8 they all frowned, saying they were surprised and comfortable with the system.

So ... Is this myth that Linux is it only for geeks, programmers and hackers? I doubt it…

What do you think? Here is the video.

Meet the new Windows 8 - Sub Eng

PS: The link is to the page of Youtube HTML5, tell me if you find any difference between this version and the other, and then if you will go for your chair to sit and wait 😀

But how strange, from Chrome on Windows I see it. And in Firefox in Mint I can also see it ...

      Don't worry, I can see it 😉

Well, I still don't see it.

I uploaded the wrong photo. I mean, don't wait for the "404" to come out ... but hey, I'll never see it from here. Although if you pass me the video without the shortened link I thank you, I do not want to stay without seeing it.

Doing this kind of thing is not new, there is a similar video for the beta of windows 7 a couple of years ago.

I remember when I had ubuntu 9.10 with compiz. I told a friend to put firefox on (she put it without problems) and then she told me "your computer is weird" ahaha. Another friend played with the jelly-like windows 😛.

I once read of a guy who totally changed the look of his Ubuntu (I think it was Gnome 2) and it looked totally Windows, he even renamed some programs and gave them the look of their equivalents (VLC for WMP, aMSN for MSN Messenger , etc).
They were using it for a while and when he blurted out that it was Linux and not Windows they were surprised and they didn't go back to Windows (it was about 3 years ago I think)

Linux allows you to do that kind of thing, it's interesting to see how everything is a question of paradigms and not a real argument like "Linux is more difficult."

Ok, I understand that it is more complicated in some things, but they are already more advanced things that surely they do not do. For example things like file partition configurations, the use of the terminal (which is simple, actually) and so on. But at the level of daily, everyday use, what any human being does with his pc normally well ... the difference is minimal between Windows, Linux or Mac.

I agree, since I was encouraged to try Linux, I no longer want to stop using it, although there are still applications or programs that I have to use with windows, just for that, but from there on out I really like how I work with windows

      Sorry, I was wrong… finger mistake…. I like working with Linux 😀

It has been several years since I started in Linux, but today I do not change it for anything. Every time I have to use a Windows system I feel almost like a prisoner: I cannot change anything, beyond the desktop background and the color of the windows - without resorting to third-party programs, of course.

In KDE, on the other hand, I can undertake so many modifications that from one week to the next it seems that I have changed my operating system. A few days I tune the KDE to Gnome 2 mode, with an almost 100% similarity, others give me to try certain touches MAC, Unity, etc. Most of the time, I create colorful and unique layouts, and my friends and family are blown away by the beauty of my system.

And as for the programs ... Now no one can take away Amarok, KTorrent, K3B, Dolphin, etc. I go into Windows and miss them. And worst of all, performance. An operating system like Windows 7, which gobbles up 1,25GB of RAM at startup, doing NOTHING, and spends all day purring with hard drives is crap, plain and simple. And the updates? The day before yesterday I reinstalled Windows 7 so I could play Mass Effect 3, and it took almost an afternoon and over 15 reboots to install all the updates. Pff.

Haven't tried installing KDE on Windows? I've always been curious to know how it works, how it behaves, but the connection has never allowed me.

      1.    Wolf said

Well the truth is that no, and I don't dare to try. Maybe if it were in a virtual machine ... With what it takes me to install and update to be able to play properly, it would be risky to put KDE in it and that, due to fate, it would go wrong and force me to format, haha.

It really installs the kde applications, I tried it and it was not worth it, half did not work well and looked ugly, you did not have a kde-type menu, but it was windows with kde applications ...

I agree with you in everything, the last time I tried it, it was very unstable, the second time I wanted to try it I could never install it due to an unknown error during the installation process, those cool errors that Winbug $ gets from time to time XD

Maybe with this new version it will go much better 😉

They say it is going very badly

      4.    Tina Toledo said

I installed it on Windows7 and it works very badly, but I don't think it's a thing of the Win but from the program ...

As for the experiment, well it is interesting, however I feel it too induced to achieve a result.

As it does not hurt to ask: P, when you make a modification of these you can throw a guide of steps.

Personally, I'm excited about that, the bad thing is that in addition to lacking imagination, my time of experimenting has passed and it seems that it will not return (even if I want to).

Although the rest do not say it, I am sure here we will also hallucinate, not only your friends and family.

By the way. The experiment was not done by just any user. It was done by a KDE developer (and contributor to various media outlets).

Well ... this has a word, ignorance.

And I do not say it disparagingly, but that does not mean that it ceases to be a reality.

As Linus Torvalds said, when you make a program (Windows) for dummies, only dummies use it. And they are not silly, they are simply the result of a lack of interest, comfort and well-organized marketing.

I think that what scares people the most or what throws them back when talking about linux is the issue of installation, partitions, configuration, etc., I think that's where they get scared, they think it's excessively complicated, just for geeks, they are lazy to read, etc. Then once started, I think anyone can feel very comfortable.
    Regards!!!

(The phrase "Resistance to change" does it mean anything in all this?)

If all the teams brought GNU / Linux factory installed, everything would be different. That's the real key to window $ "success" ¬¬. It is not because it is easier, more complete, more user-friendly for the user, that it is fool-proof, etc ... As it is not going to be "wonderful" if they have never used another alternative ??? ¬¬

As for uninstalling windows to install linux, it is the dream of few. How many windows users prefer to pay someone else to reinstall windows in order to save themselves the trouble of doing it themselves?

  13.   patriziosantoyo said

I completely agree with Perseus, most of them use windows because it is already installed on their computers.

I personally am not a computer scientist or a programmer, I am a simple common user.
I bought a laptop that came with Ubuntu pre-installed from the factory, it lasted 2 weeks and I couldn't take it anymore and I looked for a guy to format it and install windows.
The answer is simply that Linux has a long way to go to surpass the Windows or Mac desktop, and the availability of professional software is very scarce. Libreoffice does not meet my expectations, it is light years away from MS Office (and don't tell me that I use it for basic things, because in office automation tools I handle myself very well professionally and I know that libreoffice is not suitable for a professional like me).
Linux, as you say, only works for servers.

PS: now with Windows everything works faster and more fluid unlike Ubuntu. It was just worth paying to have it formatted for me.
