AppImage has an application store "AppImageHub"

AppImageHub

On Linux we are generally very used to installing or obtaining our programs or packages through the package system that way the distribution, say Deb, RPM or the source code itself.

This has been done like this for at least many years, but a few years ago, “universal” applications for Linux began to appear (so to call them) since these can be installed or run on many Linux distributions.

Universal applications on Linux

Before this We refer to the best known trio Flatpak, Snap and Appimage, although there are also the OrbitalApps (but apparently the idea no longer worked or was forgotten).

    • Flatpak, known as xdg-app until May 2016, is a utility for software deployment, package management, and application virtualization for Linux desktop environments.

The utility provides a sandbox environment called Bubblewrap, in which users can run applications isolated from the rest of the system

  • The "snap" software packages they are standalone and work on a wide range of Linux distributions.

They allow upward software deployment. The system is designed to work for the internet of things, the cloud, and desktop computing.

  • AppImage is a format for distributing portable software on Linux no need for superuser permissions to install the application.

This format is intended to allow binary software distribution independent of the Linux distribution for application developers, also called Upstream packaging.

How will they know Flatpak and Snap have their own websites, which in addition to offering the installation methods of these in most Linux distributions, they also have an “app store” FlatHub and snapcraf.io.

As for Appimage, the thing is not like that, since on their site they only indicate the guidelines of use, but we can find AppImageHub which is hosted on GitHub and that it has a large collection of applications of this format.

About AppImageHub

AppImageHub has some interesting features such as: Access to the official website of the application, Bugtracker (to report bugs in the software), FAQ of the application, in which frequently asked questions can be solved and linked to the contribution to the project, through financial support.

Not all programs have these functions available. It seems that it is something related to who distributes them, if such possibilities exist, they are linked on the App page in AppImageHub.

By selecting the desired category, illustrative images, brief summary and when available are shown, the options described above. Basic functionalities such as: Downloading the software, who distributes it and the Github site, are also present.

Up to now appimage.github.io has just over 600 AppImage applications compiled in which in its "store" which also has a good visual aspect, it has them distributed by categories of which we find the following:

  • Audio
  • Multimedia
  • Development tools
  • Education
  • Games
  • Graphics and Photography
  • Communication and news
  • Productivity
  • Science
  • Settings
  • System
  • Profit Share

Why AppImage?

AppImage is not as popular as Snap and Flathub are, since mainly It is not so easy to find applications in this format since the previous 2 have their store and this makes things easier.

This is where AppImageHub has a lot of ground to gain and exploreBesides, another factor is that not many users like it for the use of AppImage.

Even they have a great point in favor given that the application is run from the file, which we can have on a USB stick or preferred storage medium and run our application on any other computer without resorting to "reinstallation".

On the other hand, it also makes it easy for the user to test applications without compromising their system and filling it with dependencies and extra packages.

Undoubtedly AppImage has a lot of ground and mainly on the part of the developers who also give it their space to distribute their applications in this format
