Audacity and the TBRGs

To be bold

It is very common that I always find myself in trouble finding what to write on this blog given my technical limitations regarding free software, however it seems to me that exercising free software freedomsand the not free alike- is what you do with it.

In discussions about the benefits of free software, there is always a debate about the advantage that it has over proprietary software since it allows anyone who knows how to do it, to scrutinize the insides of the code, verify it and, finally, modify it if they feel like it. I don't know how to do that. But it does not prevent me from using free software to impact, or at least try to do so, the society around me. And I'm not talking about the city where I live or my neighbors. No, I mean my social context, which today thanks to the internet, goes beyond the community where I live.

A few years ago a group of fans whose common factor is their admiration for the work of The beatleyes, we decided to form a group that we called The Beatles Remixers Group. To be honest our motivation at the beginning was not to face and challenge the record companies, in this case EMI / Capitol / Apple Co / Parlphone, but simply and simply make mixes with songs from our favorite band and exchange them between us, just for pure pleasure. The thing was to have fun. However, we soon found out that, without wishing to do so, we already had a legion of followers who asked us to compile and edit at least one album with the work we had already done. And so, without wanting to, the fight began.

At first our work went unnoticed by the international corporate that represents not The Beatles themselves, but those who own the rights to their songs, however, as our work became more notorious and our releases were more popular and demanded by the great Beatlemania community, our problems began. At first they were only letters to desist from our work, then the closure of our spaces on the WEB and finally the harassment of those who downloaded our material.

Despite all this, we continue with our task ... and we continue to invest our time and money in doing it, because it is very important to mention that we never charge a penny for our work and yes, on the contrary, we got to know from vivales that burned our records and sold them clandestinely.

Today, for various reasons, the group has disbanded. Not because legal threats scared us, but rather because of the natural wear and tear of time as each of us found that each day we had less time to dedicate to this work of DJ. None of us, at least as far as I know, had physical contact with another member of the group because distances prevented us from doing so: one is English, another is Ukrainian, one Mexican, two Yankees, one Belgian ...

What will happen tomorrow with the group? I don't know ... well they said The Beatles that tomorrow you never know, however I still keep my beloved DJ weapon: Audacity which is loaded in its version 2.0.

    Excellent article 🙂

Something contradictory right? Record labels and other companies always defend their rights, saying that they protect innovation and creativity, while often the opposite is true. An example of how ridiculous the laws are is that Happy Birthday is not in the public domain and is copyrighted (owned by warner) even though it was created over 100 years ago. If you want to sing the song and legally public you must pay the sum of 700 dollars.

WTF? Well, I sing it in Spanish and I want to see one of Warner's come to charge me something .. ¬¬

Yes, in other countries the copyright expired in 1985. Equally ridiculous since 93 years had passed since the song's creation in 1893. In the United States it expires in 2030, 137 years later: /.

Audacity is very good for single track work, for conference recordings, removing noise etc, although I have always found it confusing when with my ex group we had to join different tracks, I never managed to learn it all I had to.

Well, I managed to isolate voices and instruments to remix using Audacity, I was able to convert monaural tracks to stereo using that same technique. It is very important to know the filters and how to use them, yes.

Tina, as always, your article is wonderful. You start off talking about free software and your limitations (the same as mine: not knowing how to modify the code). Then you describe a whole passion, community work between individuals who do not know each other in person and, in the end, your auction: all thanks to a free computer program.

But I'm left wanting more. Please! A tutorial on how to use Audacity and everything you mention in the comment to which I am responding, would not go amiss. DesdeLinux It is a magnificent space for you to share what you know how to do with Audacity, just as other editors have made tutorials with other programs.

Thank you for your attention and, as always: waiting to read you again in a future article.

Yes, I would be the first to try to learn something with a tutorial.

But what he has not said is that in addition to marvelous mixes with Audacity (I got beer), later he created some incredible covers, with El Gimp?, Of true luxury, which should have caused enormous envy to the designers of EMI and Capitol .

In fact, I know that the first twelve and number 18 are hers… And it shows! the rest, being good, are very, very far away.
