Gnome 3.34 available, know what's new in the new version

Gnome 3.34

After six months of development, during which they revealed a little about the changes and news of the new version of the Gnome desktop environment, the new version "Gnome 3.34" was released a few days ago. Compared to the previous release, around 24 thousand changes were made, in the implementation of which 777 developers participated who worked on the different components of the desktop environment.

With the arrival of this new version of the Gnome 3.34 desktop environment of the main novelties that stand out one of them is the ability to automate the launch of XWayland in the Mutter window manager when trying to run an application based on the X11 protocol in a graphical environment based on the Wayland protocol.

The difference from the behavior of previous versions of Gnome is that before the XWayland component was constantly running and required an explicit pre-launch (started when the Gnome session was initialized) and will now start dynamically when the components are needed to ensure X11 compatibility .

The new version of Mutter also adds support for the new KMS API transactl (Atomic) (Atomic Core Mode Settings) to change video modes, allowing you to check the correctness of parameters before changing the hardware state all at once and, if necessary, revert the change.

What's New in Gnome 3.34

Gnome Boxes now uses separate dialog boxes when adding a remote connection or external controller. When creating new local virtual machines, the font selection dialog is divided into three sections: Found Fonts, Favorite Downloads, and Font Selection.

Windows Express installation mode has been changed to use an iso image CD-ROM instead of a floppy image. Added support for loading an existing virtual machine from a CD / DVD image attached (for example, to start a disaster recovery environment). An option to enable / disable 3D acceleration has been added to the properties of virtual machines.

In overview mode, it was possible to group application icons into folders. To create a new folder, simply drag one icon to another. If there are no icons left in the group, the folder is automatically deleted.

The style of the overview mode has been updated, including a new design for the search bar, a field to enter a password, and window borders

Epiphany (GnomeWeb) now includes sandbox isolation of web content processing by default. The controllers are now limited only by access to the directories necessary for the browser to function. Added ability to pin tabs (lash pinning).

The ad blocker has been updated, which now uses the content filtering tools provided by WebKit. The layout of the summary page, which opens in a new tab, has been revamped. Optimization work done for mobile devices.

GNOME Music has added source tracking, such as the Music directory in the home directory, to detect new or changed files in them and automatically update the collection. The basic part of the application has been substantially rewrittene, which allowed implementing a pauseless playback mode between album tracks. Updated page layout with a playlist, album and information about the musician

In the configurator, a redesigned wallpaper selection panel is presented, in which it is possible to preview selected wallpapers on the desktop and system lock screen. Added a new "Add Image ..." button to add your own images as wallpaper.

In Sysprof, a tool for profiling system performance, the interface has been redesigned and the profiling process has been greatly simplified. Integrated with GJS, GTK and Mutter. Additional data sources were added, including the ability to monitor energy consumption.
