Available LibreOffice 5.0

Run fools !! That version 5.0 of LibreOffice is now available with interesting new features at the interface and functionalities level.

LibreOffice 5

What's new in LibreOffice 5.0

Changes they are enough and you can see them in the release notes for this version. At the interface level, the icons are improved, and some elements in the toolbar have been redesigned and re-placed. Let's look at a few that are worth mentioning under the hood.

Writer

  • Writer adds Support to replace Emoji and in-word
  • Styles preview in the sidebar
  • Support for marked text in Word
  • Crop images
  • Improved work with tables ...
  • and more..

Calc

  • XSLX format improvements
  • Cut, modify and save attached images in spreadsheets.
  • Improvements with the work of the rows and columns.

The rest of the tools also receive their improvements and bug fixes, there are improvements in filters and in the general performance of the office suite.

LibreOffice 5.0 installation

In the case of Ubuntu and derivatives, RedHat, Windows and OSX, they can use the download page to get the latest version. For Ubuntu I leave the links:

Download Libreoffice

Spanish language packs

Offline help packages

Once we download the files, we unzip them, enter the folders named DEB and execute in a terminal:

$ sudo dpkg -i *.deb

We do that for each unzipped folder. It is not necessary to remove any previous version of LibreOffice, but it would be recommended to avoid possible conflicts.

There is also an official repository that keeps libreoffice updated:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa: libreoffice / ppa
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get install libreoffice
Actually today I updated and then looked up the release notes. Looks great.

Note: from the repository, Libreoffice is better integrated with Unity.

Good! Excuse my ignorance, how can I update to this version, I have 4.2.xx I am on Xubuntu 14.04

    Thank you!!

add the ppa or download the files provided by elav then open the download folder from the terminal and put the following:

      dpkg -i * .deb

Obviously you must have only the 3 deb packages in the download folder otherwise others will be installed.

It comes with monochrome icons by default or you have set them. I'm not convinced by that sidebar, the truth is the one I use but it still looks horribly ugly. Even so, the improvements are many and the work done by the team is appreciated. Thank you.

the sidebar is closed by clicking on the "sidebar" drop-down menu and on "close sidebar".

Excellent. I'm going to wait for it to appear as an update in Kubuntu 15 so as not to break anything 😛 (I use Libreoffice to make publications in pdf). If I can't stand it, I'll return to this post (and your comments) to try my luck.

The truth is, I already use Debian Testing and I am satisfied with the version provided by the repos, but the news is appreciated.

I don't understand the LibreOffice development team. You have to see what they need ... I have not given myself the task of seeing the current state of the equipment. But, they should do a simple analysis:
    - What are the most productive office suites? From there, start and "grab" the best of all and implement it.
    - Perhaps we should also focus on a different way of doing things, not very daring, so as not to scare the end user but, innovating to a certain extent, that is, always maintaining a comfortable and simple use of the tools.

PS: I write "we should" because I am a programmer but that does not exclude LO users.
    Greetings.

Since they added the option to crop image, they would have added at once the option to rotate the image at any angle and not just 90 ° turns like this now and the option to change the border of the image from square to round, elliptical or other ways.

I hope they come in the next version.

Well for free office the extraordinary breeze icons better impossible ...

It still seems too "big" for my little use.

and the Abiword is often incompatible or unstable with the files (also it changes my place when I open in Abiword and Libreoffice

Curiously, I am using the "Chinese" WPS Office more and it works fine, it opens fast but I don't know what happens that I can't save in .odt!

    a greeting!

      "Oscar" Comment 22

I understand that wps is not compatible with odt, also it does not inspire me much confidence that when you open the program it sends you to its official page ???. All the other programs, none sent you to their page unless it is a product in the cloud or office or abiword or free or the ibm (Is it alive ???)

In short, my opinion is that for free basics it is heavy and abiword is perhaps too basic for word but not Gnumeric ...

So I understand your feeling…. but WPS be reluctant to use it. Compare the same file in libre / office / WPS you will see the difference even if it is odt or office!

PS: sorry for the irruption, but does anyone know a community that works with control engineering software? Cheers
