Available Linux kernel 4.0 + News

Just 2 months ago we informed them on the possibility of updating the kernel without restarting, well ... the Linux kernel version 4.0, Now it is possible.

This version nicknamed «Hurr durr I'm a sheep»Was released just 2 daysHowever, although we can quickly appreciate a significant change in the version number (4.0), Linus Torvalds himself warns us, there are no great news in this version of the kernel:

As for new features, Linux 4.0 is not too special. Most of the changes are related to the new infrastructure for applying patches to the kernel; being realistic we have made many more changes in other versions. This is a release to ensure good progress in the development of future kernel versions.

Changes in Linux 4.0 kernel:

  • Ability to update the kernel without restarting. Something that may not attract your attention, however when it comes to production servers, restarting is usually a real hassle! Can read more here!.
  • It is not a secret that Linux is used on various devices, including the PS3, well, it improves the performance of Linux on PS3.
  • Added adds support for Intel Quark System on Chip
  • Support for newer Intel 'Skylake' CPUs (we will see them in the second half of 2015)
  • TOpen-source drivers for AMD Radeon with DisplayPort Audio support.
  • Various improvements in HID drivers such as Lenovo's compact keyboards and some Wacom graphics tablets.
  • Slight changes to the F2FS and BtrfFs filesystems.

Version 4.1 will have many more news!

Linus is not entirely comfortable (or so has made it seem) with the significant change in version number. But, version 4.1 has anticipated that it will bring important and significant changes ... it has not specified which one, but we'll see 🙂

Just today I have compiled it on my Funtoo and it is going great, although the radeon.dpm error for the RV635s still persists, which when activated simply does not allow you to work since the whole system crashes and it only remains to restart the hard way. It is not a fatal error, and the truth is that radeon improvements allow to work quietly and with little heating even with this option inactive.

Okay, now to wait for the patches of Con Kolivas and its BFS; and those of BFQ 😀

With Kolivas he released the patches this morning. Now the ck-sources for Gentoo / Funtoo users is available, EXCLUSIVE, only on my overlay.

      Add: jorgicio, from Layman.

Greetings, I'm just getting started with Gentoo, by the hand of Calculate Linux and I am amazed at how magnificent the project is, it surpasses and it hurts to say it more than enough, the performance that any distribution of preconfigured packages can give you.
How could I have been so blinded?
As soon as I'm in the portage, I put on the 4.1, which will be out like clockwork in a few months.
When I gain strength with the project, I will start with the Laymans.

The truth is, I did not find anything new from 3.19.x to this 4.0.0, there are things that catch my attention, for the help as superficial as / dev / mem that as I thought it was risky, I left it disabled.

    $ zcat /proc/config.gz | grep CONFIG_DEVMEM
    # CONFIG_DEVMEM is not set

Nor do I much like the name that "I am a sheep" "Hurr durr I'm a sheep" ... that's why every sheep has a shepherd 🙁 as if to say that they herd us like a flock of sheep.

Can someone say, did the linux 4 kernel incorporate systemd ?.

    1.    Jorge said

I do not know if in Vanilla, but in the patches that each distro that supports it puts, it should. At least, on Gentoo's, it supports them as an alternative to OpenRC.

    2.    yukiteru said

Vanilla has long had support for systemd, just make sure you have the necessary options selected for SystemD to work.

From what I understand there are versions of the Kernel that are LTS and others that are not. 4.0 is it? Or does that depend on each distro? Thanks a lot

Hello, I am a Linux user and I would like to know about a book or a tutorial about what each of the sections of the ncurses of the linux kernel mean.

    Thank you very much.
