Available Linux Mint 12 «Lisa» RC

As a reader had told us in a comment yesterday, I knowit is available Linux Mint 12RC (aka Lisa) which incorporates as the main novelty, an extension group that together call themselves MGSE.

Aesthetically it looks great. I have always given him a +1 to the artwork of Linux Mint for its neat appearance. Now, as I feared, the features that are needed are somewhat excessive for my taste and possibilities:

  • 512 MB RAM (1GB recommended for comfortable use).
  • 5 GB of disk space.

But hey, they are not to blame for my technological backwardness. 🙁

This version incorporates:

But it still has problems with the following elements:

  • MATE
  • Nautilus Actions
  • Adding PPA repositories
  • Apturl and apt: //
  • Moonlight

You can see all the news that this new version incorporates in this link.

… What good news today, thank you! =)

Well, I do not know…. I'll try it…. but from the outset I don't like that it's not the normal Gnome 3 Shell with the possibility of the "made in Mint" extensions, but just plain "Mint look". Maybe I am wrong. What attracted me to the solution was that I could add extensions to my Gnome 3 Shell to improve it: basically the bar below that appears in the photo, without the menu….

You will tell us how it went 😀

Let's see if the MGSE and MATE packages will be added to the LMDE repositories soon!

    1.    elav <° Linux said

Let's hope so. Although the problem now is that the LMDE Gnome-Shell is 3.0.2 and MGSE is for version 3.2

      1.    Erythrym said

Well, as I like to experiment, I added the PPA of the Gnome3 Team to my LMDE, so I have the Shell updated, so I don't think I will have many problems ... at the moment the only problem I have with Gnome3 is that I don't it detects the sound card, and I can't explain why ...

I have tried Fedora 16 and Ubuntu 11.10 with their respective Gnome Shell and in my case this Mint 12 RC is more stable.

It is true that the extensions of the normal Gnome 3 Shell are missed, but I prefer a stable gnome shell than one full of bugs, also aesthetically you can see the seal of the Mint house. I suppose that later, they will release more extensions for Mint 12, for now the ones it brings are enough for a fluid usability.

    1.    elav <° Linux said

      First of all welcome Tix:
Let me see if I understand. Are you saying that you cannot put other extensions to Linux Mint with MGSE?

      regards

  5.   jose said

According to the Mint website, you can disable Mint extensions and leave Gnomw Shell as is…. I suppose that other types of extensions can be added. The problem with the extensions is that, except in Fedora I think, they do not appear in the repositories…. as if they were still unofficial and could give instability to the environment. In my Ubuntu I have had some Shell restarts…. more than desired ... and I suspect it is because of the extensions. I will have to minimize their use to a minimum and hope that they are more stable… ..

I'm downloading, curiosity kills me, I want to see if MGSE meets my expectations, at this moment Gnome Shell makes me feel like I'm cloistered, possibly that feeling is caused by several years using Gnome 2 and KDE, I'll see the results.

Man that happens hahaha. I do not do it because my bandwidth does not allow me hahaha, although of course, it would only be to test ...

My ideal desk, as is the patio now:

-top the indicators and extensions for this purpose (basically, time and system)
-Below, the missing Linux Mint contribution, window selector and workspaces

I prefer the application icons in the tray below, as proposed by Gnome 3

Thank you for the host Elav.
Well, I do not know to what extent there are incompatibilities between the extensions of Mint12 and that of Ubuntu 11.10, for now I have tried one of Ubuntu that does work, specifically the weather as you can see here:
    http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/839/pantallazodel2011111218.png/

I added the extension with the following repository:
    deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/webupd8team/gnome3/ubuntu oneiric main

Be careful, I have not updated anything with that repository, I have only limited myself to installing the extension and I have disabled the repository again, just in case the desktop is destabilized. I guess if it works with the extent of the weather the others will too. A greeting.

I just installed Mint 12 RC and it looks good, I had previously tried Gnome 3 on fedora and the experience was not as smooth as in Mint, namely; It runs faster, aesthetically I find it more attractive and the menu and panel below are really appreciated, like a bird (I've only been using it for 15 min. and this comment is rather a product of emotion). The guys at Mint have done a really good job making Gnome Shell more usable.

If you continue using it tomorrow, you will tell me when you have cold blood and the impetus has disappeared hahaha

I notice in your comment a hint of disappointment in relation to Gnome3, what happens? You said you installed it, maybe I already disenchanted you? For my part I tell you that I am going to give Mint 12 + MGSE a chance, it is the last one that I give Gnome3, in Debian I have been using it for two days running and I feel extremely uncomfortable, I hope that in MGSE I feel comfortable, in 48 hours I will make a final decision.

I've been with Gnome 3 + Shell since I was able to install it via PPA in the Ubuntu 11.04 beta…. and I have gotten used to it and I understand that it is the future, that it is not possible to remain anchored in Gnome 2. It is true that there is a long way to go, but if I have to make an effort to learn, I learn about what comes to stay and not about things like Unity . The Mint team has filled in the missing defect with a bottom bar that makes things much easier for you. I am not about bars, docks ... nor too much on the desktop ... and Gnome is much more minimalist than KDE for example. If you still want something like Gnome 2, you should use another desktop and not insist that projects keep breaking their heads to continue including something that looks like Gnome 2. It's my opinion, nothing more.

  11.   Tix said

Gnome 3 is the immediate and near future, among other things because Gnome 2 will unfortunately become obsolete, without support. So you have to adapt
yes or yes or look for other environments if one is not satisfied with Gnome 3. I think that Linux Mint 11 is the latest version that brings gnome 2 in a Gnu / Linux distribution and, well for the nostalgic, they still have time to say goodbye to Gnome 2 in one year.

I have just tested the 1014,20 MiB DVD, Linuxmint-12-rc and the impression I have is that I am on Ubuntu 11.10. Almost all the repositories are from Ubuntu Oneiric, except for two, and of these one is Medibuntu and the other is called Lisa. I repeat, it is as if I was on Ubuntu 11.10.
My analysis is that I would only install Linuxmint-12-rc, if my hardware couldn't support Ubuntu 11.10, and yes Linuxmint-12-rc. If my computer could offer 3D acceleration, I would prefer to install Ubuntu 11.10 from the beginning as it incorporates Gnome-Shell. I don't know if I have explained myself properly.

    1.    jose said

Perhaps the difference is that those of Mint are making sure that Gnome 3 works and everything integrates well…. and instead the Ubuntu ones are focusing on Unity and, although they offer the possibility of Gnome Shell ... it seems to me that it doesn't quite work at all well and there are always libraries out there that have to do with Unity and Compiz and that in Gnome Shell are useless.

Ideally, for me, install a distribution and at the time of choosing desktop environment, when checking GNOME, that you install Gnome 3 and the shell "clean of dust and straw", that is .... without compiz, metacity and others….

My hope is in LMDE…. but as in testing they still go with version 3.0…. Well, I don't know how long it will take to offer it….

  13.   kikilovem said

Well, I have Ubuntu 11.04 installed and I use Gnome Shell, although as you all know, at the beginning, you can choose the desktop. Gnome Shell has its limitations and some things a bit annoying, but in general I like it and it is really fast. I have not installed Ubuntu 11.10 on the same partition because it is almost the same as 11.04 and because it does not allow me to add my printer. Linux Mint Debian is not bad either and is a very valid alternative for anyone who does not want or cannot install Ubuntu in its last two versions. Well, this is my opinion but I imagine there will be others here more qualified than mine. In LMDE they are slow and it is not known when they will reach version 3, but when they do, rest assured that it will be 100% stable.

Well I have finished installing Mint 12, since I am writing, in principle I am very comfortable, it is a little high in consumption 670Mb, mail, 3 pages and LibreOffice open, what is your opinion ?.

I have tried it as LiveDVD…. and it certainly is like Ubuntu and I am still in my thirteen of not using Ubuntu-derived LinuxMint. It looks more agile and without much of the "shit" of Ubuntu…. and with a few touches it would look very good…. but hell, it derives from Ubuntu. For that I install Ubuntu. I will wait for the next LMDE…. If it's for Christmas, then I'll have time for backups, setups, and reinstallation.

In a Gnome 3 / Shell…. more modifications have been added all aimed at making it look like Gnome 2 with transparencies …… and I don't like it at all. For me, the only thing that needs to be added to Gnome-Shell is the bottom bar: windows and areas, as I have already said.

I mean, I'm still in the same: Either Debian or LMDE… .. and I can't get rid of Ubuntu without the change going to create a cure-based trauma.

Well, I have been with Mint 12 for two days and it has disappointed me a lot, it is a monster swallowing RAM, mail open this page and terminal with wget downloading, it is eating 740 Mb, it is the classic Ubuntu and its derivatives, another problem I found is that when I started Instead of grub, the black screen is displayed with a message that, when translated, says "Out of Range", after a moment Mint starts up, as in another partition I have Debian, I can't enter it, I tried the command "update-grub2 »There if the two operating systems appear but when restarting it remains the same, any ideas about it?

    1.    KZKG ^ Gaara <"Linux said

About "Out of Range" I think I know the reason, it is the screen resolution that GRUB2 has to use, I will do an article on how to change this resolution.

On what consumes a lot ... what are you going to ask, is Mint ... do not expect a product even remotely perfect ¬¬

  19.   moskosov said

I passed the emotion and I tested it thoroughly and I didn't like it very much ... rather Linux Mint 12 is like the end of cumbia: There no more!

    1.    Oscar said

I was also excited, but when I saw the resource consumption, same as Ubuntu, I cracked, I liked MGSE, but I returned to Debian.
