Backup Thunderbird and Firefox between Windows and Linux

Sometimes in the migration of a company, the most critical thing is to migrate, worth the redundancy, the information and the email accounts of the users since you have to be very careful not to lose anything in the transition. That is why I am of the criterion that before moving a worker from Windows to Linux or vice versa, the first thing is to «adapt» the user to use tools that are multiplatform and that allows the flow of data from one Operating System to another with ease.

firefox thunderbird

We can put as an example of multiplatform applications: Thunderbird, Firefox, LibreOffice, Inkscape, GIMP, and many other tools that can be used in both Operating Systems. In this case, what I will show you is how to save and restore our Thunderbird and Firefox profiles on both Windows and Linux, and although it may seem silly, it never hurts to show the process in case someone needs it.

Where are the Thunderbird and Firefox folders located?

The first thing we should know is where the folder paths are located where Thunderbird y Firefox save the settings set by the user.

On GNU / Linux

The folders for these applications are located in the / Home of the user, with the name .thunderbird (or .icedove on Debian) for the mail client, and .mozilla for the browser, although of course they are hidden. Now that I think about it, the Thunderbird folder should also be inside .mozilla, because it is the product of the same company, but anyway.

On windows

In the case of Windows, we know that the user configurations are NOT saved in the data partition, but in the System partition. In the case that we show today, it is in:

C:\Users\nombre_de_usuario\AppData\Roaming

Backup from Linux to Windows

Suppose then that we have a computer with GNU / Linux and a user that uses Thunderbird and Firefox. All we have to do is save the corresponding folders of our / home, the ones I mentioned above and copy them to Windows in the path:

C:\Users\nombre_de_usuario\AppData\Roaming

And that's it.

It is recommended that you do not open Firefox or Thunderbird before making the copy, so that you do not create another profile

Backup from Windows to Linux

Well, as you can imagine, the reverse process is the same but copying everything that is in

C:\Users\nombre_de_usuario\AppData\Roaming

For our / Home. And that's it.

Faster to find the location of the profile that is where to make the backup. We write about: support in the address bar or we also get from the menu button path -> Help (?) -> Information to solve problems -> Profile directory -> "Open directory" button and there we copy or replace the profile . Everything except the plugins will be backed up.

As the article warns, the ideal is to make the backups in the file browser with Thunderbird or Firefox closed.

    Greetings.

Good tip .. almost always "there is another method" to do things 😉

I recently migrated from Windows to Opensuse, I am still leaving it to my liking and transferring the backup to the new one, but I can say that I use this method, and for me it is better than the one proposed by @Noctuido, since I I have stayed with my settings and add-ons the same as in Windows and I have not had to touch anything.
