BE: Shell a Gnome-style fork

How are you. Well here again but now with a little analysis more of sight than of knowledge.

A few weeks ago I mentioned in a post about the future of GNOME-Shell and what was a Shell. Well, taking a walk through Devianart I meet a Devianite crazyt and I discover that BE: Shell (a Plasma fork in the purest style of Cinnamon from Gnome Shell) And the truth is that I have been amazed with the customization capacity of this fork.

According to Craazyt, the performance of this fork is much better than with plasma and even better, without removing the effects. Actually I have not tested it, but to be frank I am very tempted to do it and see the performance, behavior and other details.

Cinnamon has been a success for users of Gnome and that they want to have style 2 from the series, so I deduce that BE will be its equivalent in KDE. Although KDE it is an environment that does not ask anyone for anything, it is clear that it has something that makes many users uncomfortable and that is its "weight" (consumes too many resources) and this alternative seems to be lets have all the power of KDE in a lighter and highly customizable environment.

Although to me personally KDE I do not like (only likes) With this fork I am already seduced to reinstall it and see it in action.

I don't know if it's a coincidence or mere coincidence, but a kind of Cinnamon (BE: Shell) for KDE It indicates to me that the work teams of these forks are looking for something different, customizable, pleasing to the eye, that exploits the full potential of the desktop and, most important of all, a balanced resource consumption that allows the maximum look & feel without punishing too much to performance.

The truth is that it tempted me, but I will continue to use my Plasma because my computer supports it very well ... Still it looks like an excellent alternative ... Waoo ... I'll try it out of curiosity!

By the way (¬_¬)… Where can it be found?

Hmm, I'm too die-hard from KDE SC, these "weird things" don't convince me! (with the tone of an old curmudgeon).
We are almost in 2013: if the coffee maker that I have to use does not hold KDE SC I install the complete suite but instead of using Plasma I use AwesomeWM and holy remedy 😀

Yes, but if he doesn't mention it, I don't realize that he exists 😀! Even so, it is a good contribution and your links complement it!

      regards

well ... I will continue to be faithful to kde since I don't like the idea of using shell very much ... hopefully kde doesn't take this new trend seriously ...

Well, it seems to me that you are going to have to stop using KDE, because Plasma is a Shell xD

Well, the truth is very good, and I do not think it is a fashion, rather it is what you will find in every device on the market

  5.   jorgemanjarrezlerma said

    That such.

I know that Elav has given notes about this fork and the truth when I saw them caught my attention and curiosity to see not so much its development as its impact. I know that Plasma is the flagship of KDE and the truth, as I mentioned, does not ask anyone for anything and for details and customization features it is unmatched. Now you have to remember that desktop environments or window managers are a SHELL (plasma, gnome, etc) that allows us to use the resources and characteristics of our teams.

With tammuz I share your comment since this is not so much the fashion but the trend, since the greater use of devices such as Tablet and SmartPhones make it necessary to have something "in common" (as Apple does). It is also worth mentioning that there is a variant of android for PC (it is still development and debugging phases) and bringing a mobile environment to a PC (portable or fixed) is indicative that things are moving towards this point.

I am not a guru of information technology and communications, but if it is clear, to some extent, that this "trend" has its background, what is it? I really don't know. I don't believe in coincidences, but it is striking that the appearance of BE is very similar to GNOME Shell and being a bit bad thought; Is this an idea to attract GNOME users to KDE ?, I say because many give up for dead or on their way to death to the GNOME project. Anyway, it's just a guess but we'll see what happens.

While I have read the latest BE :: Shell posts (including this one), I think the project is being misunderstood. This shell has nothing to do with KDE developers and is not having a particularly significant hit. I would say that its existence is anecdotal at the moment, and its use is limited to very specific users who like to get their hands on configuration files.

This shell just uses certain KDE libraries and doesn't bring things like Akonadi, Nepomuk and co, which makes it a very light option, but somewhat unstable and "premature"; It has nothing to do with the "official" project and is not going to replace it at all. At best, it will be a Razor-Qt-style alternative, over time and only if it thrives.

Its author, the same as that of the Bespin window engine, has designed a system that must be configured by hand from practically scratch, after an installation that requires prior compilation. If we look at Deviantart a bit, we will see that there is a fairly extended "theme", which is the one in the screenshots of this article (and that I used briefly myself), but in a strict sense of the word, each user can configure it to their own complete whim and mold it to incredible heights. But, I insist, it requires knowledge that the vast majority do not have and that discards it in the eyes of the neophyte.

In short, it is a very nice shell with potential, but it is an alternative that does not intend to compete with KDE, only to offer a fully configurable Qt environment.

      How about Wolf.

I agree with you and it is too early to talk about this as I comment, but I also remember that LXDE has its competitor in RazorQT.

I also share with you the idea of offering a highly configurable QT environment, curiously "something similar" (I do not mean why Cinnamon exists) to Cinnamon and even more, every time I see BE it reminds me a lot of gnome and even to openbox or enlightment (of course with the necessary accessories). KDE is for me one of the 2 best DE that exist and that from his perspective has no equal. The only thing I would dare to say (without offending anyone of course) is that like Microsoft asks for more and more resources to use it to its full potential (I insist it is only a comparison, I know that you cannot compare something of quality with something that Does not have it).

I just wanted to highlight an idea that surrounds me to observe trends and behaviors when it comes to occupying market niches, because the entire software industry requires capital or money both to survive and offer news. KDE actually has a proprietary QT license and I do not doubt that GTK has its equivalent, but if it is curious and I do not think it is a coincidence that these developments are for the pleasure of being and although they do not compete with each other openly, it is certain that moment they will (like Cinnamon or Mate vs Gnome Shell)

    It looks very good.
But I don't think it will beat KDE 😀

Na, but if it is as light as cinnamon, it would be to think.

    1.    jorgemanjarrezlerma said

      How about kik1n.

The truth is incredibly configurable and can be put in a thousand ways (for example a personalization (http://www.rafaelrojas.net/2012/09/01/archlinux-kde-en-la-netbook/) and you can get an extremely pleasant environment, relatively light and to the taste of its user. I consider (and this is a personal idea) that allowing a configurable alternative through the CSS standard and perhaps at the time HTML5 and other things, will cause many of the options that are given for customization and fine-tuning to change for these alternatives . GNOME already uses it and practically (if not all) webOS sticks to it.

Although BE has nothing to do with KDE, it is clear that you are looking for a simpler alternative to achieve it, very Cinnamon style; because being frank you have to be familiar with the maze of alternatives that KDE offers and it may have given more than 1 its "dizzy".

Let's hope this project bears fruit, I really think it will and it will be an alternative to GNOME and Cinnamon and it may even become a true competitor for Plasma and that, if it is to be thought.

The article says that Be :: Shell is a fork and that is not true. It is an alternative, not a fork of Plasma.

    1.    jorgemanjarrezlerma said

      What the Windóusico.

Well, Cinnamon and Mate are alternatives to Gnome Shell and they call them forks. We could also say that RazorQT is a fork of LXDE since it is a QT-based environment using OpenBox (same as LXDE).

I think it is more a matter of semantics than thematic, it is true and at the same time not, it all depends on the use you give of the terminology and the meaning of the words used. I share your point of view in part since it is an "alternative" to Plasma since it offers another approach to customize and fine-tune KDE (I insist, plasma is incredible and has practically no equal and note what a GNOME user says) and at the same time it is a fork because it exploits the heart of KDE maximum without using the default Shell of KDE (Plasma) like Cinnamon, Mate and Unity with GNOME 3.

      1.    Windousian said

Hello Jorge. The comment refers to the fact that fork has a very established meaning in computing:
        http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bifurcaci%C3%B3n_(desarrollo_de_software)

Cinnamon is a fork of GNOME Shell and Mate is a fork of GNOME 2. Be :: Shell is not a fork of Plasma (it does not use the Plasma source code). Hope the Wikipedia link clarifies what I mean.

        1.    jorgemanjarrezlerma said

          How about Windóusico.

I totally agree with you, that's why I referred to the terminology and the use that can be given to it, for better or for worse.

I reiterate that your statement is totally correct, but I have been investigating a bit and seeing more than the source code, the tricks that BE implies and its use of the configurations with respect to KDE to be able to use BE. I can not conclude anything yet but so far I can say: Windóusico 1 your napkin 0 (hehehe).

Thank you for taking the time to clarify the point and I send you my best regards.
