CentOS 8.3 has already been released and the founder of CentOS started the development of Rocky Linux

The launch of the new version of CentOS 8.3 (2011) which arrives incorporating changes from Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.3 and in parallel the founder of CentOS, Gregory Kurtzer, announced that he is already working on the development of a new RHEL-based distribution, which is named rocky linux.

The new version of CentOS 2011 is fully compatible with RHEL 8.3, the changes made to the packages, as a rule, come down to the rebrand and the replacement of the artistic design.

About CentOS 8.3 (2011)

In addition to the new features introduced in RHEL 8.3, content 34 packages has been changed in CentOS 2011including anaconda, dhcp, firefox, grub2, httpd, kernel, PackageKit, and yum.

Changes to packages are generally limited to rebranding and the replacement of graphic material. RHEL-specific packages such as redhat- *, insights-client, and subscription-manager-migration * have been removed.

In the process of separating the edition continuously updated distribution CentOS Stream from CentOS Linux, a launch package was formed in September separate system for CentOS Stream, qwhich made it possible to separate pitch formation.

Continuing with this work, to simplify the migration from CentOS Linux to CentOS Stream, changes were made to the repository file and the repository identifiers were changed.

The repository changes are mainly focused on unifying and narrowing repository names (for example, the name "AppStream" has been changed to "appstream").

To switch to CentOS Stream, now it is enough to change the names of some files in the /etc/yum.repos.d directory, update the repoid, and correct the use of the "–enablerepo" and "–disablerepo" flags in your scripts.

While, on the part of the known problems:

  • When installing in VirtualBox, select the "Server with GUI" mode and use
  • VirtualBox not earlier than 6.1, 6.0.14 or 5.2.34;
  • RHEL 8 discontinued support for some hardware devices that may still be relevant. The solution may be to use the centosplus kernel and the iso images prepared by the ELRepo project with additional drivers;
  • The automatic procedure to add AppStream-Repo does not work when using boot.iso and installing over NFS;
    PackageKit cannot define local DNF / YUM variables

Get CentOS 8.3

CentOS 2011 images are prepared on 8GB and 605MB netboot DVD images for x86_64, Aarch64 (ARM64), and ppc64le architectures.

The SRPMS packages from which the binaries and debuginfo were built are available at vault.centos.org.

CentOS founder started development of a new RHEL build

On the other hand, almost parallel to the launch of CentOS 8.3, the founder of the distribution, Gregory Kurtzer, announced that due to discussions on Red Hat's Transformation of the CentOS Stable Platform to a Continuous Test Distribution of "CentOS Stream" announced its intention to create a new rebuild of RHEL and invited other developers to join this initiative.

I am considering creating another rebuild of RHEL and might even hire a few people for this effort. If you are interested in helping, join HPCng slack (link on the hpcng.org website).

Greg
(original founder of CentOS)

To carry out the development of the new distribution, Gregory registered the domain rockylinux.org and created a repository on GitHub.

The project is still in the planning stage and the formation of a development team. It is claimed that Rocky Linux will continue the tradition of the classic CentOS and will be developed by community forces.

The project will provide a fully compliant rebuild of Red Hat Enterprise Linux that demonstrates the level of stability of RHEL versions and is suitable for use in production projects and in the enterprise. To finance the project, the resources of the Control Command company, led by Gregory, will be raised.

Finally si want to know more about it, you can follow the thread of the discussion at the following link.

While if you are interested in learning about the development of the new distribution, you can visit your official website o the repository of this.
