Chakra drops support for i686

Chakra, one of the best distributions pro KDE, drop support for processors i686 (32 Bit), to focus all your efforts on processors x86_64 (64 Bit) due to the boom that the latter has in the market.

Due to the growing distribution of this type of processors, fewer and fewer users (of tests) of this distro that use 32 bits, so support is more difficult. That is why the next logical step in the evolution of Chakra, according to its developers, is to definitely abandon this platform since other distributions are responsible for supporting it.

During the next 2-3 months users of Chakra they will receive all bug fixes and security updates. After that, the i686 repositories and their mirrors will be kept indefinitely, but not supported.

I see this as a good decision, being Chakra a distro without many devs 🙂

  2.   KZKG ^ Gaara said

Well I see this as a completely wrong decision.
Let's face it, 32-bit applications are out there and get a lot more testing so they have fewer bugs, while 64-bit applications are more "buggy."

I think that leaving 32bits was not a good decision 🙁

    1.    lol said

64-bit applications are more "problematic" because they are not given as much attention as they should, in the case of distros that offer versions for both architectures. On the other hand, if they focus on a single architecture it will obviously improve the support a lot, and for my part I think they have done well to focus on a single architecture, since currently all new PCs support it.

      1.    KZKG ^ Gaara said

Yes, of course, but what Chakra has decided is something drastic, that is ... as I see it: «If you want to use Chakra you have than to use 64bits necessarily. »

Obviously the support will improve, but it is still an imposition that I personally do not like 🙁

        1.    k1000 said

I don't think it's an error, the same was said about 16 bits.
Also, I have been using 64-bit OS for a long time and I have never had problems and that it consumes a lot of RAM is just a myth.

    2.    sephram said

How about, in the chakra statement it says that the 32-bit architecture ISO will not be supported, however 32-bit applications will still be maintained, (There are many that do not even exist in version 64), since the lib32 repository will remain to support applications that make use of these libraries.

  3.   sieg84 said

it's better, most of your users have to be x64

  4.   elav said

Looking at it from my colleague's point of view, I agree that it is a mistake. It is known to all that 32-bit applications are the most abundant and the least buggy.

But hey, it is a step in the evolution of this distribution. We will have to see how all this comes out.

  5.   rots87 said

I do not like that they abandon an architecture, I use X86-64 in my laptop but my Desktop is i686 so if something goes wrong I will not have anyone to report it to ... well no way ... we will have to adapt and accept the changes hopefully it is to improve

  6.   auroszx said

And I wanted to try it ... Although my processor (Pentium Dual Core E2140) supports 64 Bits, I will not use 64 Bits (+ KDE) with only 1GB of RAM 😛 What a suicide ...

    1.    AL said

Thanks to your comment I just found out that my processor supports 64-bit (Pentium Dual Core E5200). It's kind of hilarious. I thought it was 32-bit because that was listed in Windows when I bought my PC, and since then I took it for granted that it was, but from what I read now I had Windows 32-bit because I only have 2GB of ram.
      Thank you

  7.   Miguel-Palacio said

Well, it sounds harsh, but as a lot has already been said, no one is required to use Chakra. See that even gtk + does not come by default in the distribution.

A couple of weeks ago I went to 32 bits because I had some problems with some applications, but the performance in general dropped and I think it is not worth wasting the processor capabilities for some applications (most of them proprietary, right?). Yesterday I had to format my computer obligatorily xD

Well, they give me the ass, but fine (excuse me): X
It was my favorite distro after putting it on my netbook without sweating a bit. But I guess all good things end: S

  9.   Windousian said

Bad news. I don't think they improve the 64 bit version support. The same efforts will be devoted as before (I hope I'm wrong) and the only thing that will change is that we will no longer have a 32-bit version.

  10.   City said

I think it will be a great motivation for 32 Bit users to jump to Arch with KDE

    1.    KZKG ^ Gaara said

      +1

    2.    Blazek said

Totally agree, if you want to use 32 bits, then there will always be Arch Linux.

  11.   xykyz said

Well I do not understand the complaints, I have been using 64bits for years and I have not had problems more than once with also "doubtful" software. What's more, other distros should take an example and improve 64-bit support, which is currently the most widespread ...

  12.   notfrombroklyn said

But chakra wasn't arch with kde by default and some optimizations? I mean as long as archlinux supports i686, there will be no problems.

    1.    Rayonant said

It was, a long time ago Chakra decided to separate from Arch and become an independent distribution, although the process is not yet complete if it is quite advanced as shown by the ccr, Tribe and the advance of Akabei.

  13.   pavloco said

Bad idea. But they decide what to do with their distro, users decide whether to use it. The problem is not to go or not to 64 bit, the problem is that your machine supports it.

  14.   Frank said

I feel that it is a wise decision, although several users still use 32 bits (my case with my netbook) it is known by all that KDE is not the lightest environment that exists, and that for 100% optimal performance it requires at least A somewhat decent computer (Oh, don't you expect it to blow you away with 512 Ram and a Mononucleo Processor) in summary, it is a logical step towards evolution, as it was said in their time that they were radical by avoiding the inclusion of libraries gtk + and look how well they have done.

  15.   truko22 said

/ I think a step in the right, I agree the 64-bit architecture is the future and I have not had problems with programs, it is common that new laptops and PCs have a lot of RAM and processors that the 32-bit architecture takes out all the potential.

  16.   Max Steel said

Well instead of complaining better I started to find out about it, I had Chakra 32Bits in a somewhat old laptop (with Celeron processor), I saw that even that low-end processor from 4 years ago supports 64bits, so, I immediately installed Chakra 64Bits and without any problem.

And in certain case, it will always be Arch 32Bits.

      + 1000

All processors have been made compatible with 64-bit technology for many years.

  17.   Rain said

It seems to me a questionable decision….

beyond whether 64-bit programs work better than 32-bit programs or if some give more problems than others
We are talking about a large number of people who handle 32-bit processors are abandoned
in my opinion it's not that we say bad. but they would have given a little more advance notice and they would have waited a little longer

  18.   vicky said

I understand the decision even though I don't like it.

A question a 2 GB machine how would it work with 64 bits?

I find it a bit worrisome that machines of more or less 5 years are considered so old that they do not deserve even support, but chakra is a distro with limited resources that has grown a lot, so it is understandable.

    1.    sieg84 said

it goes well, in my case I have never seen it go above 1.5GB of RAM in openSUSE with KDE.
Now that I'm using Mageia 2 with Gnome-Shell x86, my pc feels lighter with openSUSE KDE4 x64

    2.    truko22 said

I have a 5-year-old PC and it works perfectly with 64Bits chakra and does not consume more than 1.5 GB (I have 4) with the average programs that I use daily.

  19.   k1000 said

Raise your hand if you have a processor that does NOT support 64 bits.
I have a 1,6 GHz x 2 pc and 1,7GB of ram with 64-bit debian testing and gnome shell (with all services) and it goes flying. And I have used 64-bit machines with only 1GB of RAM at 64-bit with gnome 2 and no problem.
Well, I don't know, their fears seem unfounded.

    1.    Windousian said

I have a couple of machines that don't support 64-bit OS. And of those who support it, I have not seen significant improvements when making comparisons, I have only seen new problems. I guess the situation will have improved and I will be able to use 32-bit applications on a 64-bit system without breaking my head over dependencies. Or maybe it is not necessary because all 32-bit applications have their 64-bit equivalent. It's been a long time since I tried a 64-bit GNU / Linux, I was still pleasantly surprised.

On the other hand, I don't think my Samsung NB30 flies with a 64-bit Chakra. I will check it in the next snapshot.

    2.    albert teixidor said

Not me, and for years that all processors, even those of netbooks, support 64 bits, for very old PCs, there are more prepared distributions.

  20.   xtremox said

anyway i could never install that distro right so i use debian

It is logical, it has to happen sooner or later.
Technology becomes obsolete in no time.
Also, it is normal in a small team of developers. It's too much of a burden.
Little by little the others will follow.

  22.   platonov said

For me it is a big mistake and I use 32 and 64 bits.
Ubuntu is criticized a lot because its Unity limits users with older computers due to its great consumption of resources and chakra does something worse.
In short, these chakra at the end are not more alone than one.
I do not know something they tell me that they will hit a huge smack.

  23.   Nonamed said

Ideally, those chakra users with a 64 team and 32 system, can go to 64 comfortably without having to reinstall the entire system

    I raise my hand !!!

I have my desktop computer, a Dell Gx260 from more than a decade ago,
a 32-bit system, p4 3.0 Ghz, 2 gb in ram, 2 dd of 120 gb, and an agp graphics nvidia geforce 5200 with 128 ram (it is working with the nouveau drivers), and I have my dear Arch, with the faces of xfce and kde, of course this last cutout in the field of graphic effects (and also deactivating nepomuk and akonadi, because if the processor was sweating with these), but I installed it to test for myself, the benefits of the how much talk about kde.

To those with 32 bits it is possible that they are passed to manjaro it is also based on Arch http://blog.manjaro.org/.

PS I am still happy with life in Chakra 🙂

    1.    sieg84 said

I'm going to check the xfce version of that distro.

Does this mean that I will not be able to install Chakra with 32bit architecture only 64bit? I'm fried then !! 🙁

The computer industry is relentless and in constant progress, leaving obsolete technologies damaged or put aside. Hope that switch from 32-bit to 64-bit will take a long time for people to be able to switch teams.

Even the P4 support 64 bits. I've always used x86_64 distros and never a problem. Most distributions include 32-bit libraries to run 32-bit only applications on 64-bit architecture.

You must remember that if you have a 64-bit processor, your entire system is built to support that. It does not mean that it will consume more memory or that it only serves to address more RAM, it is the system as a whole; all the hardware and software that works on that architecture, therefore you are only wasting the money you spent on hardware by not using the applications on the proper architecture.

It seems like a wise decision. Also, you hardly want to run Chakra on an i686 processor, for older hardware there are better alternatives.

    1.    Windousian said

A couple of years ago I did a performance test on a computer with an AMD Athlon 64 X2 processor and the 64-bit OS was slower than the 32-bit (and took up a lot of RAM). So that thing about you wasting money by using 32 bits is just a nonsense phrase. People don't use 32-bit just because. To waste money is to use something that works worse. 64-bit technology is maturing but not long ago it was very green.

The Chakras made a good decision from their point of view. They focus on an architecture and a desktop environment to achieve the highest possible quality with the resources they have. But that is still bad news for many users. Fortunately there are alternatives.

      1.    truko22 said

I have a (AMD Athlon (tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4200+) and it works better with 64Bits chakra and the memory consumption was similar, I say this not to contradict you or raise debate. It was a test that I did to see what version I was left with, I also tried before with ubuntu 11.04 and kubuntu 11.10 with a similar result between 32 and 64.

Definitely, this OS would never be useful for companies, businesses and schools, since a 64-bit pc is not necessary to work with a USB or Parallel port to control a machine in an industrial process, much less to use a spreadsheet or processor. text. is more, not even in domestic use to play an HD movie.

Of course, a 64-bit processor is faster than a 32-bit processor, but is it really taking advantage of it, is it necessary in all uses of a PC? For me it is pure marketing, I believe that it should continue to manufacture processors of different technologies so that there are different prices for all needs and uses.
