Chrome OS 71 arrives with better integration with Android and Linux updates

Chrome OS 71

Following an update to the Google Material theme and a complete redesign of the app launcher intended for tablets and touch devices, Chrome OS 71 has arrived today. One of the most important improvements in this update is to improve the experience of having a Chromebook and an Android device.

This improved integration between an Android device and Chrome OS is called Better Together. After updating, users will see an alert on "How to make devices work better together." By selecting this alert you can learn more about this function.

The Better Together features available vary by phones and Chromebook. On the Pixel, Better Together brings instant tethering to share internet between mobile and laptop. The function is also available Smart Unlock which allows users to unlock their laptops just by having the phone close by.

All devices will benefit from web messaging integration using the same app with QR code pairing. It is mentioned that to use Better Together you need Android 5.1 or higher.

Linux support improvements

Chrome OS 71 brings many features to improve Linux support, allowing for more advanced development and programming. The Linux virtual machine now appears in the Chrome OS task manager.

Meanwhile, the virtual machine can now be shut down with a right click on the terminal icon. The new option to shut down Linux is much faster than restarting your terminal. Additionally, shared folders will allow you to read and write files.

ChromeOS 71 is available right now and will gradually roll out to all Chromebooks in the coming weeks.
