Chrome OS 91 arrives with file transfer support, security improvements and more

Recently the Google developers who are in charge of the Chrome OS project, announced the launch of the new version of the Chrome OS 91 operating system, version in which the main novelties that are presented are a support for the transfer of files between devices, security improvements, among other things.

For those unfamiliar with Chrome OS, you should know that the system is based on the Linux kernel, ebuild / portage build tools, open components, and the Chrome 91 web browser.

Main new features of Chrome OS 91

In this new version support for running Linux applications has been stabilized, which was previously in beta testing. ANDLinux support is enabled in the configuration in the section «Configuration> Linux», in which you must then click on the «Install» button, after which the application «Terminal» with a Linux environment will appear in the list of applications, you can run arbitrary commands. Files can be accessed in Linux environment from file manager.

Running Linux applications is based on the CrosVM subsystem and is organized by launching a Linux virtual machine using the KVM hypervisor. Separate containers are released with programs inside the base virtual machine, which can be installed like normal Chrome OS applications. When installing graphical Linux applications in a virtual machine, they are started by analogy with Android applications in Chrome OS with the display of icons in the launcher.

In addition, Both Wayland-based applications launch and conventional X programs are supported (using the XWayland layer). For running graphics applications, CrosVM provides built-in support for Wayland clients (virtio-wayland) running on the main host side of the Sommelier composite server, which supports hardware-accelerated graphics processing.

Another novelty that stands out is that support for Near Share is included, which allows you to transfer files quickly and safely between Chrome OS or Android devices nearby that belong to different users. Near Share makes it possible to send and receive files without providing access to contacts and without revealing unnecessary information.

We can also find that the ability to configure the built-in VPN was provided on the stage before logging in. VPN connectivity now supports user authentication page, allowing authentication-related traffic to pass through the VPN. The built-in VPN supports L2TP / IPsec and OpenVPN.

The implemented flags that indicate the presence of unread notifications associated with a specific application. If there are notifications in the search interface of the program, a small round mark is now displayed on the application icon. The configuration offers the possibility to deactivate these labels.

The file manager provides offline access to files stored in Google Docs, Google Sheets, and Google Slides cloud services. To enable access to files in offline mode, you must select the directories in the "My Drive" section in the file manager and activate the "Available offline" check for them. In the future, these files will be available through a separate "Offline" directory.

The new build now available for most Chromebooks current, as well as external developers have trained versions for common computers with x86, x86_64 and ARM processors.

Last but not least, if you are a Raspberry user, you should know that you can also install Chrome OS on your device, only that the version you can find is not the most current, and there is still the problem with video acceleration due to hardware.
