Cloudflare launched the Cloudflare SIM Zero Trust

cloudflare, the American company that provides a content delivery network, Internet security services, and server services has recently announced that it has launched an eSIM for mobile devices.

For those who are unaware of eSIM (embedded SIM), they should know that this is an evolution of the SIM card for mobile phones and connected objects. It is an embedded version of the SIM card that allows a device to access an operator's network and store information. The eSIM is integrated directly into the terminal: smartphone, tablet, connected watch.

Although the size of SIM cards has been getting smaller and smaller, some "new" communicating objects, such as connected watches, no longer have enough space to integrate a SIM card, even in nano format. And above all, it is quite complicated to change the SIM card in the connected objects. Furthermore, the mobile phone is now an essential tool in the modern workplace, especially since you have moved out of the office.

The purpose of an integrated SIM card is multiple: it is less complicated to buy SIM cards and insert them into trays that are increasingly inaccessible; SIM cards are no longer at risk of being damaged by external forces; and finally,

The eSIM format has two new features: the card can be soldered to an electronic card and a protocol has been developed that allows the SIM card to be provisioned remotely already through the mobile network. Thus it is possible to download profiles of different operators within the eSIM without physically intervening in the SIM card.

While there is always the question of the accessibility of any new technology, no need to worry: eSIMs are available at almost all points of sale of the main telecommunications companies. The technology may not be widespread, but it is certainly accessible and available to users. The other problem with eSIMs is that they are not as easy to transfer between devices, but they can still be removed from a previous device and transferred to the current device.

About the product released by the company, it launched two products, the Zero Trust SIM and Zero Trust for mobile operators, two product offerings aimed at smartphone users, companies that protect corporate phones, and operators that sell data services.

The eSIM will be linked to a specific device, which will reduce the risk of SIM card fraud. It can also be used in conjunction with Cloudflare's WARP mobile service, a software complex consisting of a VPN and a fast private DNS server 1.1.1.1.

According to Cloudflare CTO John Graham-Cumming, such a SIM card will be another security factor and will be especially effective for business customers when used in conjunction with hardware keys.

“We still face security breaches from organizations due to issues with protecting their applications and networks. What was once a "real estate budget" is fast becoming a "remote employee protection budget," says Graham-Cumming.

The Zero Trust SIM service will allow DNS queries to be rewritten, after which Cloudflare Gateway will connect and filter them out. Inspection of every host and IP address before they enter the Internet, as well as identity-based connections to services and other devices, will also be available.

The Zero Trust Mobile Carrier Partner Program, in turn, will allow service providers to offer subscriptions to mobile security tools on Cloudflare's Zero Trust platform. Interested traders can sign up starting today for more information.

“We intend to start with the US, but making it a global service as soon as possible is our main task now. Although we are at an early stage of development, work is being done in parallel to create a project in the Industrial Internet of Things (IoT) field (eg vehicles, payment terminals, shipping containers, vending machines). Zero Trust SIM is itself a foundational technology that opens up many new uses,” adds Graham-Cumming.

It is worth mentioning that so far it is unknown how much the Cloudflare eSIM will cost. It will launch first in the US. The company is also exploring the possibility of shipping physical SIM cards.
