Collabora shows more details about Monado

Monado from Collabora

Globe with connections, city lights and The Sun.

Collabora, as you may already know, is working hard to bring virtual reality and augmented reality experience and support to your Linux desktop. Surely you already know the Monado project, its own runtime implementation of the Khronos group's OpenXR open source project. If you want, you can see more information about this open source project in the official website that they have destined for it.

Khronos has already published the API specification and abstraction layer for OpenXR 1.0 virtual reality hardware. With the improvements it includes, Collabora works to bring a runtime to Linux. You would already know enough details of the Monado project, but now it has been Collabora itself that has commented on some extra details that were not known. Undoubtedly interesting to integrate these new technologies to desktops based on our favorite kernel.

Collabora and the Monado developers are focused on bringing that full, open source runtime of OpenXR for Linux. It is a component of the XR (eXtended Reality) software stack that combines virtual reality and augmented reality technologies. This will support hardware to understand how to process non-standard input from HMD devices and drivers and how to render to those devices, and even provide functionality through the standard OpenXR API.

It seems that Monado's latest update is not quite ready yet, since many pieces are missing. But they have invited anyone to join and report or contribute to the project. Despite not being complete, major improvements have been made, such as new drivers included to work with PSVR and HMD, PS Move Controller, OSVR HDK, Razer Hydra, etc. But they will still have to complete quite important work like creating code to handle binding of actions for various hardware devices.

As for what's to come, they seem to report more work for the tracking systems and sensors that take care of it. They are first focusing on the color-based tracking system for PSVR and then using it to help other device manufacturers and hackers ...
