Collapse OS, the post-apocalypse operating system designed to work with easy-to-recover components

OS collapse

Collapse OS is a new operating system open source designed specifically for humanity's darkest days. Will have to be able to work with components that are everywhere and easy to recover in anticipation of an apocalyptic future where consumer electronics is a thing of the past, a future where the global supply chain collapses and people no longer able to mass produce electronic devices that remain a huge source of political and social power.

According to its creator, developer Virgil Dupras, Collapse OS is what the humans of the future will need to reconfigure what will continue to be technological devices current. Dupras seems to share the opinion of those who believe that humanity is moving towards a painful stage in its history and that after this hypothetical apocalyptic period, it is very likely that people will be able to exploit or better control the old world technology that will be made. charge of their peers.

In this regard, he said:

“I am doing this to mitigate a risk that I believe is real. It is not inevitable, but it is probably enough to justify a modest effort.

Virgil Dupras believes that the biggest problem for people who are familiar with post-apocalyptic technology will be microcontrollers, with integrated circuits that bring together the essential components of a computer: processor, memory (ROM and RAM), peripheral devices and input-output interfaces.

It will also be possible to build a machine with a unique design and scrap parts with low-tech tools.

Explain about this on the website dedicated to the project:

"Computers, after twenty years, will irreparably fail and we will no longer be able to program microcontrollers." It also ensures that Collapse OS can be started on minimal and improvised machines, to interact with improvised devices (keyboards, screens, mice ...), to edit text files, to compile source files. assembler for a wide range of MCU and CPU,

Also, the goal of this project is to be as independent as possible. With a copy of this project, a competent and creative person should be able to build and install Collapse OS without external resources (i.e. the Internet) on a machine of their design, built from parts reclaimed with low-tech tools.

Collapse OS is based on a z80 kernel and a collection of programs, documents and tools. It is compatible with 80-bit Z8 microprocessors, its editor emphasizes that it can already run on a Z80 homebrew computer, the RC2014 and in theory on a Sega Genesis console.

For now, the project is hosted on GitHub and Dupras is pleased with its progress. You are looking for developers who can contribute to the project, but will still need to meet certain criteria:

"Participation requires a very specific set of inclinations (believe in the apocalypse) and skills (electronics and z80 compilation)."

With which Collapse OS has the main objective of being as simple and generic as possible, to be a z80 kernel and a collection of programs, tools and documentation that allow anyone to assemble an operating system that can:

  1. Run on minimal and improvised machines.
  2. Interface through improvised means (serial, keyboard, screen).
  3. Edit text files.
  4. Compile assembler source files for a wide range of MCUs and CPUs.
  5. Read and write from a wide range of storage devices.
  6. Replicate yourself.

Regarding the entrance, Dupras wants to give the system the ability to connect any invented keyboard or other forms of improvised interface, so there is support for PS / 2, D-Pad, keyboard adapters, etc.

Just as a shell to play with I / O is also there already. SD cards are supported, self-replication has been implemented for easier sharing (if there is enough RAM and storage), and the kernel is fully customizable, written as loose modules glued together.

Without further ado you can consult more about the project on its official website (the link is this) or check the code on github (the link is this).
