DebConf14: What's to Come at the Debian Developer Conference

DebConf14 Logo

Last Sunday, August 3, the blog Bits from Debian announced the start date of the 14th edition of its well-known conference DebConf, which will be held in Portland, Oregon (United States), on Saturday August 23; starting with the usual welcome talk, and continuing with the couple of topics that we will see below:

  1. Debian in the dark ages of Free Software: This exhibition will be held with the help of the former project leader Debian, Stefano zacchiroli, exposing the achievements of free software throughout its history, in addition to touching on its current situation in which it is threatened by trends such as cloud computing and constant privacy violations; the latter being -according to Stefano- Debian the best option to preserve it.
  2. Weapons of the Geeks: Led by cultural anthropologist Biella coleman, who will talk about the contributions of hackers and geeks to activism and social change, and the impact that online communities have on international politics today.

As if that were not enough, it is also mentioned that the conference will be broadcast live over the Internet, although it has not been mentioned which platform will be used for it.

To finish, here is the link where you can review the complete program related to the conference in question.

I think it's great that a great distro (and the one I use, also) speaks almost officially (after all, it is not the current leader commenting on where they want to go, but it is more than an isolated developer) about privacy, it is something that we are losing regardless of our operating system; For example, it is not clear to me that Red Hat does not have some kind of agreement with the NSA, we know that it is due to the laws of the country where the company resides, USA, and it has not come out to defend the integrity of its system or selinux, which it still uses by default ...

Privacy was lost a long time ago. If we use the internet, telephone, bank accounts, etc. We will always be discoverable and a product for advertising agencies.
