Debian 10 "Buster" will arrive on July 6 and this is what it will offer us

Debian 10 Buster

Work on the Debian 10 "Buster" operating system series began two years ago, as of July 2017, two weeks after the release of the Debian "Stretch" series, which is currently the last stable version of Debian.

We finally have the official release date for Buster Niels Thykier, a member of the Debian release team, said on a recent Debian project mailing list. The intention is to publish this version on July 6, 2019.

Debian 10 is expected to be supported until 2022, before the long-term support team takes over maintenance support, which will continue until 2024.

Expected shipped with approximately 55,000 packages in its depots, compared to 52,000 included in the current Debian 9.

In addition to the new software, many of the tools that users depend on will receive updates.

However, they could be older than the software included with Linux Mint and Ubuntu, but it should be more stable through additional testing.

In a message to the developers on the mailing lists, Niels Thykier said:

“Modifications that are not ready to migrate to testing at that time will not be included in Buster for the initial release.

However, you can still fix bugs in Buster through point releases if the change set (set of changes to be treated as an indivisible group) follows the rules for updates to the stable release.

Unlike version 4.9 provided with Debian 9 two years ago, the Linux kernel 4.19 in this new update will be delivered and ready for use.

What will the new version of Debian 10 Buster offer?

Once released, Debian 10 will be the main release of the Debian project until 2021, by which time Debian 11 "Bullseye" should be released.

Squid installer

Beginners will no longer have to worry about dealing with the traditional Debian installer running in text mode.

Debian 10"Buster" introduces the Calameres graphical installer, Together with the old Debian installer it still allows much more than Calameres, but for beginners with Calamares you can now install the system easier and faster.

Gnome Desktop 3.30

The desk of Gnome which was at version 3.22 on Debian "Stretch" is updated to 3.30 on Buster.

Some of the new packages included in this version of the GNOME desktop are gnome tracker-gui, a dependency on the gstreamer1.0-packagekit, so there is an automatic installation of the codec in this new version.

Kernel 4.19.0-4

This new distribution uses the LTS kernel versions, resulting in much better hardware support, as well as a 5-year maintenance cycle.

Open JDK 11.0

Debian has always been stuck on OpenJDK 8.0. Now with Buster, the team has moved to OpenJDK 11.0 and is committed to handling the new releases.

AppArmor enabled by default

On Debian Buster, AppArmor will be enabled by default. While this is good, system administrators must take care to enable policies correctly.

Nodejs 10.15.2

For a long time, Debian had Nodejs 4.8 in the repository. During this cycle, Debian migrated to Nodejs 10.15.2. In fact, Debian Buster has many JavaScript libraries, such as yarnpkg (an alternative to npm) and many others.

NFtables replaces iptables

Debian Buster provides nftables as a comprehensive replacement for iptables, which means better and simpler syntax, better support for ipv4-v6 dual-stack firewalls, and more.

Python 3

Python 2 will be deprecated on January 1, 2020. Although Debian has Python 2.7, efforts are underway to remove it after moving all packages to Python 3.

Therefore, Python developers are advised to move their code base to be Python 3 compatible.

Secure boot support

With Buster RC1, Debian now supports secure boot. This means that machines that have the secure boot bit enabled should be able to easily install Debian.

You do not need to disable or bypass Secure Boot. As expected, Debian 10 "Buster" will be released with ISO images for new implementations.

Slow but safe. Without missing your biannual appointment. Very good for professional daily work.
Many thanks to its developers, thank you very much for making available to people a distribution whose end result seems immune to the ups and downs of monetization and politics.

I had it on my PC for a long time and deleted it by accident. I went back to Debian 9 for now but wait for the time to upgrade to Debian 10
