Today I was talking about the release of the first RC of the Debian Installer and I just found a link on the Wiki of this project where we can see "what's new" that version 7 will include.
Ext4 will become the default file system, although, of course, older versions can still be used. Interestingly, systemd can be used as an option alongside journald , taking advantage of new features in the kernel.
LibreOffice replaces OpenOffice , and as Desktop Environments we have Gnome 3.4 , KDE 4.8 and Xfce 4.8 which will come by default in Debian KFreeBSD and Debian Hurd.
ffmpeg has been replaced by libav , as it is considered to have a more conservative release process and therefore better suits Debian 's needs . Debian Wheezy comes with all the features of libav (formerly ffmpeg) libraries and interfaces, including mplayer, mencoder, vlc, and transcoding.
Additional codec support is provided, for example, via lame for MP3 audio encoding , xvidcore for MPEG-4 ASP , x264 for H.264/MPEG-4 AVC , vo-aacenc for AAC and AMR-OpenCore audio encoding , and vo-amrwbenc for Adaptive Multi-Rate narrowband and wideband encoding and decoding, respectively. For most use cases, installing packages from third-party repositories should no longer be necessary.
Python 2.7, Python 3.2, and Ruby 1.8 are included. New applications for medical use, neuroscience, and other fields have been added. You can see the full changes at this link.
I'm eagerly awaiting the release of Debian 7 so that the flow of new packages to Testing can continue. 😉
