Debian Wheezy might come with Xfce as the default desktop

After reading the news in Very linux I started looking for more information about that Debian 7 could come with Xfce as Default Desktop, and yes, I found in the blog of Joey Hess something related to the topic.

Contrary to what many may think, this possible change is not due to the bad decisions that the boys of Gnome lately (according to my point of view)Instead, they are looking for an alternative to lighten the weight of the installation CD. Gnome y KDE they get too big to be included, besides, I think it would be a very wise decision to make Xfce default to install Debian. Because?

Well, I think there are plenty of reasons. Not only is it a light and functional desk, but also, although it is not as advanced as its bigger brothers, Xfce it can provide quite a pleasant experience for users, even those who hate Gnome Shell and they feel comfortable with something more traditional.

This could also be something interesting, because maybe, if Xfce comes by default in Debian, managed to attract the attention of a larger part of the Community and this leads to more developers joining with new ideas and proposals to improve this Desktop Environment.

It only remains to wait and see what happens, for my part, I give the idea +1 😀

Great news, if confirmed it would definitely be an important boost to the development of Xfce ... let's hope it finally comes true 🙂

That's exactly what I wish Xfce got more support from other developers 😀

Strongly agree, it would be a huge boost for Xfce, and we could get to see new versions much sooner. Let's wait to see what happens.

It would seem like a very successful option.
Gnome and KDE are getting bigger and heavier. Also Gnome continues to give problems with some graphics cards (mine, without going any further) and many users do not like it.
With XFCE we would have a lighter installation cd, and then you can always install another environment, if you like it better.

      Exact. ^^

I am using xfce on my Debian and I am more than happy. The idea does not displease me at all, since I myself uhi from gnome shell :-).

I invite you to go through my post and see how beautiful and functional xfce can be:

Elav I follow you for a while and I congratulate you for your posts

I would also like the idea ... the downside I see is that the next stable Debian does not seem to come with the current Xfce 4.10: - /
    http://packages.debian.org/search?keywords=xfce4

If you look at it, 4.10 is only in experimental, so it will not become stable unless they do something strange ... Anyway.

Well yeah, that's the fucking thing .. 🙁

Well, maybe Debian's possible decision is not directly due to the new concepts adopted by Gnome, but that is true only up to a point. The fact that Gnome 3 has gotten heavier is already weighing on its use in older computers (most of us have one lying around in the attic) and we have been forced to look for other desks. And is that Gnome, in its new version, has left many things on the way. Gnome 2, on the other hand, had a good lightness-functionality-simplicity ratio.
That, for now, has been lost.

It seems to me that this is a "politically correct" statement by the Debian team. Something makes me think that it is due to the disadvantages of Gnome 3 (Its shell, its performance, its concept, etc) and this is an elegant way to leave Gnome. I have no proof that it's true, it's just a hunch. Greetings.

    1) Joey Hess's entry is a month old I see.
    2) Recently what came out was the first beta of the Debian 7 installer

Now that I have searched a bit more, there are already changes in the taskel ………….

      http://anonscm.debian.org/gitweb/?p=tasksel/tasksel.git;a=commit;h=2a962cc65cdba010177f27e8824ba10d9a799a08

And looking at the discussions on the mailing list it says that with that context, why not let the CD installation be only for net-install installations and that for offline installations, why not just use the DVDs

Another stick for Gnome Shell and they go?

Let's see if it was true and he came with Xfce so those Gnome would realize that they are staying alone with their "little monster"

The news is very interesting, as they comment, it would be great if that happened. I already had some time without going through the blog and what change it has had, there is no doubt that it improves day by day.

If this happens, this will be, for me, the best news of 2012 and the final clean and jerk of XFCE.

Whatever the reason for using Xfce is going to be a huge wake-up call for the Gnome team. There is no lower blow than the Universal distribution changes your default desktop after so many years.

Good ... I've never used XFCE ... but good comments are everywhere, certainly Gnome is far from the hearts of all of us and of any Linux user.

Ahhh another thing ... THE NEW PAGE REDESIGN IS BEAUTIFUL I really congratulate them 😉 they are simply Great ..

The only strange thing I see is that I am using Ubuntu and I change the user agent to the Chrome browser so that it shows me the Ubuntu logo and it shows me the Debian xD "weird" but it doesn't bother me.

  16.   jamin samuel said

Ahh another last thing ... I don't think I know, that they should increase the size of the fonts in the comments ... Everything is very small, even smaller than the size of the fonts of the post

We will change the comments much more, we need to finish them hehe.

Whoops! I didn't know where to put it so I left it right here. CONGRATULATIONS on the new design of the web! I love!!! (without accents or enyes for Belgian keyboard, as usual hehehehe)

    A greeting!

hahaha I have finished a post presenting the new theme that elav started yesterday, and there we can talk haha

The Drawing of the OS I use (above) no longer appears I'm still trying to get used to the new blog design .. But I like it .. hehe ..
    Good for XFCE !!
Just today I was giving my cousin to choose between Lubuntu and Xubuntu, for his Netbook (knowing its limitations) and although he was delighted with the Lightness (fast and light) of LXDE, he did not resist the visual appeal, customization, and also lightness of the XFCE ..
So with great pride I can say that «I SAVED ANOTHER SOUL !!» hehe ..

The logo of the distro will appear next to the sidebar, we are still programming this 😉

Maybe they have realized that many of us have left gnome shell.

Hello, I have been reading the blog for a long time, it has helped me a lot and the new interface is great. I've been a long-time and dead user of KDE, but I think it's great that Debian comes with XFCE by default, a great desktop for a great distro.

    1.    KZKG ^ Gaara said

Hello and thanks for reading us 😉
We hope you like the change in the theme haha.

Wao at good time, without a doubt the OS would perform better, the Xfce is very practical and light.

I am testing XFCE on debian installed in virtualbox, with 1.5 gb of ramm it is much more fluid than kde with the same ramm and in debian as well.

Will Gnome reconsider? if there is something to think about.

    Excellent blog design.

Curious, right now I'm from Ubuntu, and I saw that it said debian.
    Greetings.

  24.   diazepam said

And yet in your comment user agent it says that you use ubuntu

    1.    KZKG ^ Gaara said

The programming of the OS detection is still to be finished 😉

  25.   ossmanjorge said

Very good 😀 I'm just using the testing branch with xfce and I love it 😀 it's simple and looks great! I just have a problem, it seems that when the cpu heats up, it restarts .. this did not happen to me in gnome 2.x, is it because of that or because of the video drivers? I have the nvidia repositories installed, I installed it by default without installing the free drivers

My colleague, that of including xfce in many distros is the most successful decision that many free OSs can take since even the latest version is very stable. It is the desktop that has been evolving little by little but with firm steps.
