La University of Granada (UGR) has developed a communication system to help children with síndrome de Down who have communication difficulties or some intellectual disabilities to communicate and integrate with their environment. |
The software, called Sc @ ut, is based on the use of simple pictograms that correspond to gestures and words, and that children with Down syndrome can use to communicate and avoid the anxiety and frustration felt when communication is not. it is fluid, explained Down Spain.
The program, which is "easy to learn and intuitive", falls within the type of software known as "teaching support software". Thus, its advantages also include that it can help parents and teachers to monitor the performance of students with communication difficulties.
Sc @ ut can be used on the Nintendo DS console, on computers, or PDAs, among others. It is free software, so anyone interested can modify it, study it and redistribute it, said Down Spain. Its creators believe that this is a field in which much progress can be made and great strides can be made. For this reason, they strive to offer an augmentative and alternative communication system, with a view to turning it into a more flexible platform that is easier to customize depending on the case.

A very good initiative.
That good!. Recently they also published in MuyLinux a note about a device tested on Gnome-Shell that, I think, would help a lot with this type of disability, as with other motor disabilities.
Please obviate the "farts" comments that are in the post, it is here:

Super good for kids with that kind of disability 🙂
extraordinary, we will assess it soon when I can, I even imagine that it can be used for very young children in the process of learning to communicate well.
Reading on the page they have already received awards from the Spanish government, applications like this should be in the official repositories of every distro. For my part I will try to implement it as an aid project here in my city, we will see if I am lucky xD.
