Maybe you are lucky and your favorite games are in the repositories of the distro you use. However, some Linux games are a bit more complicated to install. Either because they do not have packages for your distro, because they do not even have binary packages for Linux (you have to compile the source code) or simply because to play them it is necessary to install certain dependencies.
All of this can be a bit complicated for the hardcore gamer who just wants to press a button and start playing. Luckily, there's DJL , a game installer inspired by Steam. |
DJL: a tremendous game installer
DJL downloads, installs, and lets you run games in just a few steps, no matter which Linux distribution you use. A dream come true?
The games are downloaded from the DJL repository. While the list of games is huge (+100) and contains some major titles, it's also worth noting that some games are a bit outdated. For example, in the Ubuntu repositories there is already version 2.2.1 of Freeciv and in DJL there is still 2.1. However, DJL's game list is much more extensive than the one available in Ubuntu.
How to install DJL
1. Download the program from its official website.
2. Unzip the downloaded file and run the jdl file.
sudo sh djl.sh
…or simply double-click on the file with Nautilus and select the Run option.
3.- The first time you run the program, a window similar to the following will appear so you can configure the directory where the games will be downloaded and other options.
4. The News tab lists news about the games and the program. The Games tab displays all installed games. The Repositories tab allows you to choose which game to install.
