/e/OS is an Android-based operating system, free from Google, with its own web services
The release of the new version of /e/OS 1.20 was announced , and this new version includes improvements focused on protecting user privacy, as well as synchronization with Lineage 19.1, added support for new devices, and more.
For those who are unaware of /e/OS, you should know that this is a mobile operating system based on Android, free from Google, with its own web services with the aim of preserving the privacy of user data.
Main new features of /e/OS 1.20
In this new version of /e/OS 1.20, one of the most significant updates is the work done on the advanced privacy package . Its design has been updated to allow the transfer of dummy location and IP address data to applications , while simultaneously blocking user activity tracking systems integrated into those applications. Statistics have been added showing the number of personal data breaches blocked over the past 30 days, as well as information about the applications causing these breaches.
Another notable change in this new version is the addition of support for the Application Licensing API , used in some applications to verify license status and ensure user authorization. Third-party applications using this API now function correctly in /e/OS. Support has also been implemented for the On Demand Modules API, enabling the download of APK packages for split applications as needed.
To view PDF documents, the MJ PDF application has been incorporated instead of PDF Viewer Plus. This change provides users with more options and updated security patches. Additionally, the ability to automatically resume interrupted update downloads has been implemented.
App Lounge now provides a zero-level privacy label for a list of apps whose terms of service clearly do not respect privacy, user data (as rated by TOSDR) and contain questionable clauses related to breach of confidentiality and transfer of user data.
The fixes from the LineageOS 20 branch have been integrated , and for the Murena Two device, the default camera resolution has been set to 12MP. Additionally, the Fairphone 5 device has received the FP5.TT40.A.131.20231130 update.
Finally, developer builds have been prepared for Pixel 5 and Moto G7 Play devices, providing an optimized experience for these devices.
Other notable changes in this new version include:
- Installation instructions for Teracube 2e (2020) are now clearer
- device list has been synced with Lineage
- The latest LineageOS 19.1 bug fixes and security updates have been merged (list)
- Camera takes pictures instantly even after resetting settings
- The /e/OS icon and /e/OS app name are now used for Maps notifications
- no more flickering in the image sent by MMS when sending an SMS to the same recipient immediately after
- Local update feature now works as expected
Downloading the system update now happens without any issues. - The “No Internet Connection” message is now displayed in the proper layout.
Installing paid applications using a personal account is possible again
Canceling any installation is now handled without any problem. - Quota warning notification is now systematically displayed when needed
- Checking for an event no longer causes the app to crash
- The image quality is better.
Night light now works as expected
Battery usage data is now displayed. - The lowest volume level on calls when using headphones is now reasonably loud
The photo is now taken even if the camera is moving. - It is now possible to send SMS with the Bouygues operator
