Elementary Luna Beta 1: Simply Beautiful

Elementary OS it's the only distribution that when I see it, it makes me want to run out of Debian + KDE, and it cannot be denied that it is a copy or improvement of OS X, the appearance of this layout is beautiful.

Some days ago cassidyjames announced on the ElementaryOS blog that we could now test the Luna Beta 1, which incorporates interesting news and improvements in this distribution based on Ubuntu 12.04. Whatever they say, Elementary OS he's setting his own course and he's doing very well.

As I have not yet been able to download the .iso (obvious connection problems as always), I will rely on the images taken by Andrew to go describing each element.

To start with, they have created their own Desktop Environment o Shell about Gnome 3, which is named Pantheon, which consists of the Welcome Window, Panel, Application Launcher, Dock, Window Manager, Application Settings, and Theme. It's great the way workspaces and windows are managed:

I love working with the splash screen, for this they use LightDM and the default theme has smooth graphics and animations showing the time and date as well as accessibility options.

The top panel is named WingPanel. According to its developers, it is lighter than the Jupiter panel (the old version) and has a simpler and more refined look. Its indicators have been reworked and the Applications element opens now Slingshot instead of a menu.

Slingshot is an application launcher, which has been designed in such a way that it can work in different resolutions, showing its elements in different ways. To complement this application we have the Dock, which is named Plank.

Plank has been written from scratch using Vala, and I particularly love it. It has very basic functions and in this version it has support with LibUnity, which allows to increase the spectrum of possibilities and functionalities of the same.

Plank It can be configured from the Control Panel, which is named switch board.

A very wise decision (should learn Ubuntu ones) was replace Compiz by Gala, a window manager that uses LibMutter.

Applications

Among the featured applications Geary, a new email client, which impersonates poster.

maya, it is a simple desk calendar. With it you can create, view and manage events to organize your agenda.

The audio player is called Noise, and it has a very simple interface:

Luna also sees the introduction of Scratch, a light text editor, with great support for code languages, which is based on a powerful plugin system so that you can transform it into your own IDE. Something that I love about this text editor is that when you save the document for the first time, it will automatically continue to be saved with each change we make ... 🙂

PantheonTerminal, a lightweight and simple terminal emulator with support for tabs.

Last but not least you will find Pantheon Files, which replaces Marlin is a kind of amalgamation between Thunar and Dolphin 😀

As can be seen in general, each application of Elementary OS meets the objective of this distribution to provide elegance and simplicity in each of them. If you are interested in trying this distribution, you can download it from the following links.

Yesterday I tested it in LIVE mode, the interface is very neat and does not consume too many resources for the appearance it has. Elav note that Elementary is based on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS.

You have just taken the news out of my hands because I just found out, I am testing it right now and in truth compared to the unstable isos of a few months ago they have been polished enough above all they have corrected a lot of errors in Files and now Swithboard really It controls the preferences of the entire system, in addition to the customizable behavior of the corners for actions such as showing all windows and control over the work areas, I will install it and help to report bugs until the final version is released.

PS: As far as Luna is based on Precise Elav

    1.    elav said

Yes, I already knew about Precise, but for some reason when I wrote the post Lucid came to mind .. Anyway. About the post, well you could test it thoroughly and make a Review, I think we would be delighted to read it .. 😉

O_o believe me this is one of the nicest and neat Gnome shells I've ever seen. If I only liked the Debian derivatives I would give it a try, but since I don't, I just marvel at Pantheon's fine finish. Simply spectacular. In fact, I respectfully think they've done more work on the artwork than Gnome Shell 3.6, and that's the second release. Congratulations to the team, and long life to ElementaryOS.

Although I am an unconditional lover of Arch Linux, whenever I read or find elementary news, the truth makes me want (just like elav) to download the iso and install this beautiful distro. I love how simple and straightforward it is, clean, clear and uncomplicated (what a desktop should be) with considerable functionality and smart and balanced resource usage and resolution. I also like that it derives from an LTS from as this gives it stability and reliability in good time.

I already downloaded the iso and this end I will install it on my little daughter's laptop (which by the way is a whole linux to the core, she uses openSUSE) since I showed it to her, she loved it and wants to try it.

Occurring crazy things, I am going to wait for it to be stable and download the desktop fonts and experiment with this desktop environment but with Arch Linux as a base.

Hello, greetings, the truth is that I am migrating from ubuntu to archlinux (because ubuntu is good at first but then it gets heavy and correcting the errors is not so passing, there is not much freedom), and despite the fact that I wobbled a bit because I have the famous bcm4311 chip, do not discourage me and I spent two days configuring my laptop with xfce4 and everything has been great, the tutorials that are on the internet of arch are many and very good. Yesterday I started to test the Elementary OS and I was fascinated, but I don't want to abandon Arch because in this week I have learned a lot and I am starting to feel comfortable from the Arch console, with pacman and the AUR PKGBUILDs.

My question to those who know more is, is it possible to install the ElementaryOS desktop environment with one or another application in Arch? If I do a clean installation of Arch on a PC that is about to arrive, I can install everything that ElementaryOS brings to Arch (I mean from its sources in Launchpad) and if possible, how?

Thanks in advance, and it really is very good that ElementaryOS has been stable for me, and very attractive to look at.

I also use Libre Office 3.6.3 and I don't know which computer suite it brings and if I can continue using Skype, Pidgin, VLC, Gimp, Clementine among others.

elementary os is based on ubuntu 12.04, if elementary includes its own programs for some things, this in order to unify the interface and user experience, but you still have the option to install all the programs that you can install on linux mint or ubuntu .

It hurts that they are based on ubuntu ... I would like them to be based at least on debian or else on other better distros like redhat, sabayon, arch, etc 😀

    1.    tarantonium said

I don't know why you have that mania for Ubuntu. It has the advantage that you have many packages and it will also be a pioneer in topics such as games for example (with steam already in beta). The support and the infinite documentation are not far behind even with debian. But if you want a distro of this style and based on debian try SolusOS.

    2.    taregon said

As a user of elementaryOS from Jupiter, testing the daily builds, and now the beta I can recommend 100% that you try this distribution.

It's the only distribution that doesn't touch design, and I'm obsessed with it. It is the only one that has everything I like, a careful theme, well rendered fonts, spectacular wallpapers ... I also tell you that modifying it is not as easy as in other distributions, but it can be done, although I don't think it can be improved. Another thing is that you like dark themes.

The pampering is noticeable in all corners, it has applications developed on purpose to fit in with the minimalist air, such as Geary, Maya, etc. And the best of all is that it does not install things for you because yes, it offers a minimum set to start and for my taste there is nothing left over. Then you choose what you need, it is not one of those distros that install 100 programs that you do not use later.

In short, to all of you who do not have a vocation marked by some distribution (and even to you) I recommend trying this one. It sure surprises you, then you will see all the other little cared distributions. Perhaps the only one that is saved from burning and that holds the type is SolusOS, another distribution that I recommend trying.

  15.   raerpo said

ElementaryOS is my preferred distribution and I have been using it for more than 3 months with the Daily Builds and I must say that it is quite stable even before this Beta is released. I've been testing many distros and the one that convinced me the most is this. Although it is based on Ubuntu 12.04, its performance is much better (even on my laptop the consumption is comparable to xubuntu). Ultimately I think everyone should give this distribution a chance and see that what everyone is talking about is true.
PS: Although it is a small detail, also something nice about ElementaryOS is the image it shows when it loads and turns off.

    1.    Germaine said

You can change that image by installing Super Grub Manager

I have been following the process throughout the year, the truth is that I have wanted to delete my arch + openbox and install it, but we better wait to see the final version, then try to do something the same on the desktop, install fbpanel and adapt it like wingpanel, install from AUR plank as dock, geary and xnoise files, openbox theme is dumetella and gtk theme is greybird and so it is:

It only lasted a few hours…. but beautiful if it is, there is no doubt.

The first thing I did, either by inertia, is to put Firefox, Chrome, Gedit, Audacious and my usual soft, the one that Luna brings does not convince me.

And another of the things that annoys me the most is the absence of the 3 usual buttons on the windows, close, minimize and maximize.

The mania that some have with removing them, already with that loses points for me ¬_¬

  18.   Germaine said

Here I am testing this distro in Live and I liked it a lot, I think I am going to format my netbook and place it, one question; When the final version comes out, can I update it or do I have to do a clean installation?

    1.    elav said

      Not necessarily .. 😉

  19.   jamin samuel said

The bad thing will be when it gets stuck in the versions of the packages .. since it is based on an LTS (a frozen distro)

    1.    elav said

It is not that it is frozen, because the LTS continues to receive Security updates and some packages (ex: Firefox) .. 😉

      1.    jamin samuel said

And nothing more ... because if a new version of GIMP or LibreOffice or whatever comes out, you can't install it unless you add external repositories and there you lose the happy "security" of LTS.

That's what I mean .. it will keep the ubuntu 12.04 repos for 5 years

I think Elementary is a very good distro they should launch as an independent distro and have their own repos

  20.   elav said

Next goal: Put KDE exactly like ElementaryOS .. 😛

1- Put a set of monochrome icons.
2- Set the window buttons as Elementary.
3- Remove the shade from the windows.

I like minimalism well applied. What the Gnome team and always, the Elementary team want. I used it as a LiveCD and it works very well and beautifully (how nice would an extension be that transforms Gnome Shell in this way!). But it seems to me that the versions are very much in the making (versions 0.1, 0.2, etc)…. and they need to evolve. For example Maya does not integrate with the Gnome Sheel Calendar as if it does Evolution and if we add the Gmail calendars, even less; or for example Noise, which is missing some options. In other words, what do we want, minimalism or more options? It is difficult to achieve the middle ground. Anyway, it has always seemed like an option to consider, but it would be more interesting if it were based directly on Debian and especially when the new applications (all very useful) improve a little. Maybe the next version. At the moment I trust more in the evolution of the Gnome team.

    1.    Blaire pascal said

I would like Gnome-Elementary minimalism, Qt not GTK +, and KDE configurability, but Gnome 2.x.

That they are striving to make an exact copy of the OSX desktop, we agree on that, but from there to improve it ... that is far from reality.

On the other hand, I have tested it in Virtualbox and it runs very well to be a beta, in addition to having many tools of its own making which is admirable. And yes, it should be noted that today for my taste it is the distro with the most delicate and easy-to-look desktop. I like the effects because they are only what is necessary and do not obstruct or cause distraction.

    1.    Blaire pascal said

O_O, I wouldn't say it's a copy of OSX just because it has a panel on top and a dock on the bottom. If so I would say that the default XFCE configuration is a very cheap copy too, and KDE is copying Winbugs just because it has the bottom bar and a start menu. It is a question of comfort, not of copy. Go ahead and configure everything and change the environment in OSX, with costs I think there is only one environment. I don't want to start a flame, but it IS NOT A COPY!

      1.    medina07 said

OSX is not designed to change environments and that is not a mystery to anyone.

And… you don't think that having so much to choose from, the Elementary boys prefer an OSX-style configuration, being able to create their own style…
And yes, whether we like it or not it is a deliberate copy, which does not have to be bad for that.
But from my point of view that is not significant, the important thing is how the distro behaves on our computers.

    To brainstorm ...

I wrote to ElementaryOS asking if they had a forum or wiki in Spanish and they replied that since they don't have one, I am free to create it.

I copy and paste the related part:

I'm not totally sure what you're saying (I only speak English), but let me see if I can work out what you're saying.
There are no official forums, and thus no official Spanish forums either. You're more than welcome to set an unofficial one up. 🙂

The way I see it (except what the blog owners think) I think it is very beneficial that we do it and we would be a point of reference, I do not dare to do it because I am just starting in Linux (8 months) and mine is medicine, This computer science is one of my favorite hobbies to de-stress, but I would collaborate in what is within my power.

In my opinion it is still a better option than Mutter, but it is already a matter of taste.

The distro is very nice, it looks fluid and very neat visually, a bit annoying the animation to change the desktop but it is well planned (you only change the desktop when you configure the corners). I think that an evolution in GNU / Linux has been seen for a few years: that of distributions of 3 or more development "layers", in this case Elementary is based on Ubuntu which in turn is based on Debian, while Debian deals with the "base" the rest are increasingly polishing the user's face. On the other hand, I think that Elementary is not going to be a KDE "style" distro, where customization is what counts, a "minimalist with few options" distro seems to me to be the way (Gnome-Shell style). Finally, the amount of "shells" that Gnome 3 has is impressive, I think that the desktop "architecture" chosen by the Gnome kids is very stimulating for alternative developments. Regards.

Like many of those who have opined in this post, I have tried elementary OS and it seems quite great, although with some other shortcomings that I think are very important, such as the search engine at the top that other desktop environments have.
Another detail that makes me very uncomfortable is that I cannot connect to the internet with a HUAWEI 3g modem, although the system recognizes it, it does not allow me to connect, unfortunately I could not find out what the problem is. I'd really appreciate if anyone knows anything about it, as I'd love to use this distro later.
