Despite this, Thunderbird's speed and simplicity is, or was, far superior to Evolution's. Which, I find, has changed in the new version of Evolution that we find in the Gnome 2 branch. Gnome 3 users will be able to corroborate or deny this.
Now, in Ubuntu specifically, and from the indicators, in the case of the Message Menu, to receive notifications of new emails, it is necessary to have the program open all the time. Specifically, it must be in the foreground or background on our desktop, occupying a space in our dock, launcher or list of windows.
The idea was and is that, when closing it, it is minimized to the Message Menu, in the style of Banshee, Gwibber or Empathy. An idea that has been debated for quite some time on the Ayatana Mailing List and, to this day, I don't really understand why it was not included.
It is true that it is being analyzed to replace Evolution by Thunderbird, especially on the merits of the latter. But there are still many of us who continue with Evolution, to find it more complete.
So, if you use Evolution in Ubuntu 11.04 and want to improve the handling of the program and its integration with the desktop, all you need to do is open the terminal and sequentially paste these lines:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa: goehle / goehle-ppa sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install evolution-indicator
Logically, and as I have said many times in my blogThis can also be accomplished through a graphical installer, either through the Software Center, Synaptic, or by Software Sources. I put it this way because I think it is good to lose extreme respect for the terminal and because I find it faster and more direct.
This will be enough to get the job done. Which, I repeat, is to close Evolution and continue running not in the foreground or background, but go directly to the Message Menu and, by continuing to run, it allows us to receive notifications.

Thanks pepe x the good vibes. I tell you that we publish many posts about other distros. However, don't forget that Ubuntu is the most popular distro and therefore it is natural that there are posts about Ubuntu as well.
