Facebook chat on Pidgin & Empathy without special plugins

Yesterday, precisely, we were talking about the different ways to use the XMPP protocol in Linux and did we mention the main chat clients that supported it. Well, apparently this open and extensible protocol is proving to be really solid, which is why it is being chosen by "big players" like Google (for GTalk) and now also Facebook.

La facebook decision basing your chat on this protocol has been announced recently. This means that we will no longer need third-party plugins to chat on Facebook using Pidgin, Empathy, etc.

Here are the steps to use XMPP to chat on Facebook using Pidgin & Empathy.

Pidgin

Protocol: XMPP.
Login ID: we put the Facebook Login ID (which is generally an email address)
Domain: «chat.facebook.com»
Password: your Facebook password.

Empathy
The same steps should work.

In addition, complete as follows:

Jabber account
LoginID: username@chat.facebook.com
Password: ***** word
No encryption enabled, and everything else blank.
