Fedora 33 arrives with improvements in temperature management, software and Internet of Things edition

On Tuesday, October 27, developers of the Fedora Project released through a publication the availability of the new version Fedora 33.

Fedora maintains a central role in the development of these novelties through upstream development. In fact, the developers of the distributionn also contribute directly to the code of a number of free software content in the distribution including Linux kernel, GNOME, NetworkManager, PackageKit, PulseAudio, Wayland, systemd, the famous GCC compiler suite, etc.

Fedora 33 Key New Features

This new edition comes with improvements to the user experience when switching to GNOME 3.38. This update brings many changes:

  • Grids of frequently used applications and all merged.
  • The Tour application has been redesigned to guide users when using GNOME for the first time.
  • Parental controls have been added to the User Control Panel.
  • Some ergonomic improvements with the option of displaying the battery percentage (without resorting to advanced parameters) or the possibility of restarting the machine directly from the main menu;
  • Some applications have been redesigned such as the screen capture tool or voice recording. Many application icons have also been redesigned;
  • Improved performance when recording screen;
  • With Wayland only, displays can have a different refresh rate, depending on machine specifications;
  • The GNOME web browser enables tracking protection by default, allows a tab to be muted, and disables video autoplay;

Fixed function to hide bootloader menuThis feature introduced with Fedora 29 allows you to update the kernel in a transparent way for the user. If after a kernel update the boot fails, the bootloader will detect it to choose the old kernel automatically thereafter.

The text editor of the dwarf console becomes the default text editor instead of vi. In fact, the variable $ EDITOR it was never set by default in Fedora and many tools like git, I saw se became the preferred alternative option.

However, nano is considered more intuitive for users as it does not require special knowledge to use it.

Swap memory expansion now uses zram by default. In fact, when physical RAM runs out, the kernel can use paging to transfer programs or data in memory to massive memory like the hard drive or an SSD.

This is transparent to the user and programs, however this procedure is slow as these devices are not as fast to access as RAM.

Btrfs becomes the default file system for office-oriented variants, including Fedora WorkstationSo it replaces ext4 which is obviously still usable for those who want it.

Keep in mind that OpenSuse 13.4 took the plunge in 2014, and Facebook has been using it internally for a while, a company employee was also involved in this change in Fedora. The expected benefits are:

  • Fix some bugs associated with strict separation between partitions / y / home.
  • Native redundant data compression, reducing storage footprint and wear and tear on storage devices;
  • the ability to reserve minimum IOs for certain processes by using cgroups, which Btrfs manages well;
  • reducing storage complexity by having Btrfs manage the set from the kernel.

DXVK becomes the reference implementation of wine3d based on VulkanThis will improve the performance and compatibility of graphics programs intended for Windows and running on Fedora, especially video games. The package wine-dxvk it was available since Fedora 31 to enable this change manually.

Hardware management

Better management of peak activity and heating of Intel processors, among others through the demon thermald. In fact, modern processors, especially those from Intel, have a wide variety of temperature sensors and different modes to limit the processor frequency in order to reduce or contain the temperature. This daemon will collect data from the processor to choose the most optimal mode of operation.

The service dmraid-deployment.service will not fire if no RAID firmware is detected during the installation. A firmware RAID system is when RAID is managed at the motherboard and at the BIOS level.

Fedora IoT Edition becomes an Official Fedora Edition. This version that addresses the x86_64 architectures , aarch64 y ARMv7 is relies on rpm-ostree such as Fedora Silverblue and containerized applications for easy maintenance and upgrade of internal components. It is also a minimalist edition by default.

Collection X.org tools will be offered in more individual packages than the generic packages xorg-x11- {apps, font-utils, resutils, server-utils, utils, xkb-utils} used so far.

Some utilities are also removed. These collections of public services were quite historic, but offer little flexibility and no longer represent reality. For example, luit utilities o edid-decode They are no longer even developed under the aegis of X.org. The version control of these packages no longer matched that of the integrated projects.
