Fedora is looking for options for a new logo

Marin Duffy , a designer at Red Hat, on behalf of the Fedora Design Team, presented two options for the Fedora project and related branding elements for community discussion.

The project leader started the development of the new logo to eliminate the flaws in the current logo. The currently used logo was developed in 2005 and was unsuitable for monochrome, small size and dark background printing.

Fedora project leader Matthew Miller had already initiated a redesign of the logo in October 2018.

Subsequently, a ticket was created, numerous designs were made, and they were discussed in many places.

Now, designer Mairin Duffy has presented two of her own designs . In her contribution, she explains in detail the history of the Fedora logo and the considerations that have been reflected in the new design.

The Fedora logo has been revised several times over the years. It currently consists of the lowercase letters "fedora" and "right," and enlarges within a bubble the underlying dark blue infinity symbol, part of which is highlighted to form an "f."

This logo, as simple and attractive as it sounds, has several technical and design problems, according to Duffy.

Although Duffy recently created a monochrome version using hatching technology, it doesn't seem to be satisfactory. The hatches are too narrow for small items and the screen exits the hatch.

The logo uses elements from its own fonts and it is not convenient to focus on the design.

Option 1 Fedora logo candidate 1

This project has a flaw in that it still includes a bubble mark, which comes with all the alignment headaches we talked about.

Its position relative to the logo is changed to a more typical design (mark on the left, slightly larger than it is now), and this design allows the mark to be used without the bubble ("mark sans bubble") in certain applications. Both variants of the mark can be in one color.

The font is a modified version of Comfortaa that is handled manually and has a modified 'a' to diminish the console with 'o'.

Since the main goal here was really a light touch to solve the problems we have, you can see which elements like the Fedora Remix logo and sublists are only slightly affected: the 'remix' logo text is changed to Comfortaa, and the '"fedora" The logotext in all sub-logos is updated.

In addition to eliminating the aforementioned flaws, the new versions proposed to the designers have attempted to preserve the general brand awareness and similarities with the previous logo, presenting familiar elements in a more modern way.

Candidate 2

fedora logo candidate 2

As in the first image (candidate 1), the font is a modified version of Comfortaa. It is manually typed and has a modified 'a' to reduce blending with 'o'.

The brand changed the size ratio between the two infinity loops. It also completely removed the bubble from the main version of the logo.

However, as an alternative possibility, we could offer in the logo guidelines the ability to apply that mark in different ways.

The main goal here was really a light touch to solve the problems that we have. You can see which elements like the Fedora Remix logo and sublists are only slightly affected.

The text of the 'remix' logo is changed to Comfortaa. Similarly, the 'fedora' logo is updated in all sub-logos.

This logo candidate is another departure from our current logo than candidate # 1. However, it is a bit closer to the design of the various icons we have for Fedora editions (server, atomic, workstation).

It is a brand that does not depend on contrast, otherwise it is free and will remain independent background.

Mairin Duffy concluded.

As an additional problem for several years, the possibility of confusion of the logo with the Facebook logo is known.
