Firefox 7 is here, with better memory performance

Mozilla makes available to its users a new version of Firefoxfor both desktop systems and mobile devices. Let's see the changes from this version.

Twelve weeks ago many technology blogs echoed an announcement: Mozilla would reduce Firefox's memory consumption. This was beginning to be noticed in the trial versions, which in some cases could reach 30% less than RAM memory consumption than the official version at that time. These changes finally reach the stable version, with which we can notice this reduction in memory use in the browser.

Beyond the discussions about whether it consumes more or less than other browsers, it is always good that consumption goes down. From the about: memory screen we can see a more detailed report of the memory consumption that each tab is having.

Instant sync

One of the main problems that Sync as a service had is that when it was synchronized without the user noticing, this generated doubts about the status of the same before having to leave a computer.

As the objective is that this synchronization is not something that the user has to remember, it was decided to synchronize some features more often and keep the current frequency for others.

For example, bookmarks and passwords are synchronized almost instantly so that we do not have the danger of leaving the computer before synchronization or that we have to wait for the mobile device to synchronize to see the direction where we should go.

Telemetry

The first time we use this version, Firefox will ask us if we want to participate in Telemetry, a system integrated into the browser that sends anonymous performance information to Mozilla, without being able to identify from which computer it was sent. To learn more about the objectives of this program and how it works, you can read this article (In English).

Windows improvements

Azure is a process that improves Firefox performance with Direct2D on canvas tag. In this way, the performance of the processes generated within this tag is improved.

Additionally, the way fonts are displayed has been improved by using GDI for smaller sizes instead of the new APIs for fonts.

Firefox Mobile

The experience the first time the program is started was improved, with better explanations and the possibility of choosing the language. At the moment all languages are downloaded with the program, but the idea for future versions is that the language is downloaded the first time it is run, upon detecting the language of the device.

From the previous version, images were scaled in high quality on devices with NEON processors. From this version the same functionality was achieved in devices that use other processors, such as the Tegra.

In addition, Android text selection handlers have been added, which helps Firefox better adapt to the operating system where it is running.

Installation

sudo add-apt-repository ppa: mozillateam / firefox-stable
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install firefox

You can also download it from here or go to Help-> About and you will see the option to update.

Thank you very much Eärendi for summarizing the improvements in Firefox. Although it is improvements in the stable version and they are good, I prefer to test it at home than in the office where it is crucial for my work.

At least the version of ubuntu 11.04 (which claims to be 7.0.1) the memory saving is not noticeable, you have to see the version downloaded directly from mozilla

The improvement is especially noticeable when opening multiple tabs.
