Firefox, the most used browser in Cuba

With the title: Firefox gains ground in Cuba en Mozilla-Hispanic have published an excellent article on the high level of use of Mozilla Firefox in Cuban territory. I leave them verbatim below:

Firefox gains ground in Cuba

2011 was a year in which there were some changes regarding the position of the use of browsers around the world, it should be noted that Mozilla's goal has never been the market but to spread and fight for the Open Web. But while these changes occurred in the world, in the heart of the Caribbean there is a place where Firefox it is still going strong and, more and more, it is tipping the balance in its favor, gaining many more fans and loyal users than its rivals in the field.

With an incredible 69.4% usage figure -for many it may seem like a dream- It is possibly Cuba and without fear of saying it, the country where today the fire fox and the mission of Mozilla. But, why is it that in that Latin American country Firefox have such a high usage figure? For some time now, the government of the Greater Antilles has been emphasizing the use of free software and the search for free alternatives to proprietary applications, and one of the software that is leading in this field is precisely the browser Mozilla Firefox, who has permanently ousted all of his opponents in an overwhelming way.

If we look carefully at the image we can see how from January 2011 to date, Firefox it has grown gradually from 59.73% to 69.4% (January 2012). Although there are still a few days to finish February, we cannot overlook the arrival of 70% acceptance, a fact that the members of Firefoxmania, The Mozilla Community of Cuba It makes them very happy and jump for joy.

Another reason why Firefox has earned a place on the Cuban family's computer is the ability to access the official download sites of Firefox and its add-ons as they are open in many of its proxies and it is very easy to save an add-on from Firefox for our local PC and share it with other users. And taking into account that there are a large number of add-ons that allow us to customize Firefox to a high degree, this allows to have and navigate with Firefox be a delight and unique experience.

In addition, competitors play an almost zero role since the closest is Internet Explorer and its use falls more and more month by month and the Google browser is not officially available for the Antillean country due to US policies against the Caribbean island, it also happens with its add-ons that cannot be downloaded from the Chrome Web Store.

I can only wish even more prosperity to Firefox in that country, congratulate the Cubans for the excellent choice they have made and urge other countries to follow their example :-)

For me one of the best there is, if I find an article from a year ago where it was shown that it is one of the best browsers out there, along with opera, Chromium, Google Chrome. The best hackers gathered at an event and with these browsers they could not, worse explorer, safari, and the blackberry browser, have if I found the article.

I must say that I am somewhat annoyed with Firefox, I recognize that in this version 10 its performance improved in GNU / Linux, in my case the conflicts are presented with the proprietary Nvidia driver, KDE4.8 and Mozilla products (Firefox, Thunderbird, Seamonkey) Not so using the free Nouveau driver, which unfortunately still does not match the Nvidia binary.
Although I use Opera (which was pleasantly surprised by the way), I have sympathy for one of the emblems of free software like firefox.

It is unfortunate that "one of the emblems of free software" is not really so free or so interested in freedom. If you want a free Firefox you can use Debian's Iceweasel or GNU's GNU Icecat.

Actually I think it is an emblem of Open Source, not SWL, I'm not sure about this 🙂
What it is an emblem of is freedom in the network, standards 😀

Theoretically Open Source is equal to Free Software. In practice, it is where they are not equal because Open Source adapts the rod according to the case or what it wants to measure.

Firefox represents a Mozilla product, it does not represent the Open Web; I know that in the minds of many the cake is another, unfortunately.

The freedom of the network requires plurality, therefore a partiality (whatever it is) cannot be an emblem of the freedom of the network and doing so undermines it.

The same for the standards where their emblems would be that of the consortia and that of the respective technologies. Firefox for example is not an emblem of HTML, CSS, etc, they have their emblems. When Firefox replaces them we are in trouble and Firefox would be a threat to standards. I believe this I have already discussed it right here.

By the way, I have been "forced" to enter a field that I wanted to avoid on another subject. I'll leave it at that though. 😛
