In our previous post about Open hub, we mentioned that they are the Software Directory Sites, and we mention some of them, especially dedicated to Free Software and Open Source. In this post we will focus on the Software Hosting Sites (Code Hosting) useful for our community, especially during the year 2020 .
Usually, and as usual, a good portion of developers and advanced users or not, of Free Software and Open Source, know and use some of these Software Hosting Sites, but the truth is that the range of options is a little wider and it is worth knowing them all.
As we explained in the aforementioned post, the Software Hosting Sites are:
" … Web domains that support or provide a code hosting tool, to be used as version control. In such a way, to allow developers to work together on multiple projects. Of these sites, specifically for Free Software and Open Source, there are also many sites among which GitHub stands out, ... ".
GitHub
Because GitHub is one of the best known, we will show a small list of Software Hosting Sites, both free, free and open, and commercial, which can be a practical and useful option to replace GitHub.
This because of GitHub, despite being a online development platform powerful and secure, as well as popular for hosting software projects, using Go as a version control mechanism, and to provide hosting (repositories) for open source projects, and private software (proprietary and / or commercial), since it was acquired by Microsoft, many have avoided using it and migrated to other alternative platforms.
Therefore, Software Hosting Sites following are a good alternative to GitHub to house the open source project (s) that are necessary.
