FreeMind: A control panel to manage your Samba file server

Here in the blog we have spoken numerous times about Samba, Highlighting the Introduction to Samba what did you share fico, the excellent tutorial shared by the Jose Albert about how Build a simple Samba Server with a low-resource computer and the old but very important article on How to install and configure SAMBA on Ubuntu. To continue complementing all that theoretical basis around Samba, we are going to make known to FreeMind a control panel that will allow us to manage a Samba file server, including disk management, RAID, backups, among other functionalities.

What is FreeMind?

FreeMind is an open source Samba control panel developed by Daniel by technikamateur, it is distributed as a simple web interface, based on HTML and CSS, which has a powerful back-end developed in python3.

FreeMind Its objective is that we can easily manage the files on our samba server, detect problems, create backup copies, take and use snapshots of the application, manage a recycle bin and other series of characteristics that make this a fairly complete panel .

It is important to note that FreeMind is in full development so its use in production environments must be subject to various tests in test environments, its characteristics and functionalities will surely be improved over time so now is a good time to test and suggest changes to the tool.

The source code of the application can be found on the official github here. and you can leave application reports here., it is important for both the development and the community a quick and efficient feedback on the performance of the tool.

FreeMind features

  • Administration of samba servers from a Web control panel.
  • It has a functionality that allows the installation of security patches automatically, which guarantees us to have a safe and updated samba server.
  • It allows you to restart and shut down the samba server quickly and easily.
  • It shows the status of your server, displaying important information such as the conditions of use of your hard disk, free memory, the use of services among others.
  • Excellent data recovery management, making backup copies and allowing the restoration of the same in an efficient way.
  • It offers a set of tools that will solve the most common problems in a samba server implementation.
  • It has email notifications.
  • Free, open source and distributed under the GPLv3 license.
  • Many other features that you can enjoy.

Undoubtedly this is a great control panel to manage your Samba file server that we can start to study and visualize its performance, since it is a beta version, many of its functionalities may not be 100% stable.

In AUR freemind is a concept mapping tool

It would be greatly appreciated if the deb rpm and AUR / arch packages were discussed, as the 3 majority packages or failing that, a common format such as snap or flatpack
