GAFAM Open Source: Technological Giants in favor of Open Source

The use of Free and open technologies every day it expands more, not only between people and technosocial organizations, but also between Public and private organizations, above all, among many relevant private Organizations in the world technological field, some of which are known under the acronym «GAFAM».

For those, who might not be familiar with the subject «GAFAM», in a previous post, we explained that basically «GAFAM» is a acronym formed by the initials of the «Gigantes Tecnológicos» of the Internet (Web), that is, «Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon y Microsoft», which in turn, are the top five US companies, which dominate the global digital market, and are sometimes also called the Big Five (The Five).

GAFAM versus Free Software Community: Control or Sovereignty

While in another previous publication we expressed the following:

"In this present Fourth Industrial Revolution, the existing Ecosystem of tools (Applications, Systems and Platforms) of «Software Libre y Abierto» favors the adoption of «nuevas tecnologías», allowing Organizations to be more competitive and profitable in these times. Although the human factor is also key, especially at the level of training and mastery of these tools."

Reason why, we must see beyond any personal appreciation as something positive, the growing and progressive process of adoption and use of Free and open technologies at all levels and by any actor. However, so that each person can form a better appreciation in this regard, we suggest at the end of reading this publication to explore the following previous recommended posts below, to expand and improve your own opinion about it.

GAFAM Open Source Movement: For or Against Open Source

Today, both public and private organizations are progressively moving towards a greater integration of the Free Software and Open Source their business models, platforms, products and services. That is, the free and open technologies they are increasingly an important part of the way of working in and out of them, for the benefit of their owners, and clients or citizens.

Much of this is usually due to the use of free and open technologies allow accelerate migration and modernization towards the cloud and other new technologies, a more accessible cost, in less time and with higher levels of transparency and security for all those involved.

Of course, not all of us usually see the approach and involvement of public and private organizations, especially of the Technological Giants (GAFAM) in the field of Free Software, Open Source and GNU / Linux. But it is the trend, and you have to progressively see the positive and negative effects of their actions and deeds.

I personally perceive it as something positive although suspicious, due to multiple public and notorious events that are not usually anything positive, especially those related to the misuse of our data to the detriment of our privacy, anonymity and cybersecurity, usually.

For this reason, I reiterate that each one must form their own opinion about it, and the recommended previous posts are a good starting point to generate one of their own.

GAFAM Contributions to Open Source

As you can see later in each link offered, each of the Tech Giants that are part of the GAFAM, has an excellent and growing Open Source Software Catalog worth exploring:

that gafam uses and promotes open source is like wanting to look good to god and the devil, applications must guarantee privacy and open source does not always meet those requirements

Greetings, MX2048. Totally agree, so I personally perceive it as something positive, although with suspicion.

I see it as a strategy to impose its standards that, being proprietary, would take longer to extend

In addition to being released, they have the possibility of having tens of thousands of 'workers' for free improving it and they win

I just want to remember Steve Jobs' promise to release the Facetime protocol; Has anyone seen it? Well that ...

I recognize however that the effort to publish Swift by Apple, has been something positive, although certainly interested.

The "Big Five" are interested in saving a few durillos with what others do, but not sharing their own, it's that easy.

And Microsoft has always been about adopting and subverting standards to bust them from within.
